We are used to that when we want to achieve something we have never done before we start looking for the fastest way to achieve it. The problem with this is that when we take the time to analyze it, we see it as possible; what's more, we know it because there are other people who have achieved it this way. Then the question arises, if they could do it, why can't I do it?
Estamos acostumbrados a que cuando queremos lograr algo que no hemos hecho nunca empecemos a buscar la manera más rápida de lograrlo. El problema con esto es que cuando nos tomamos un tiempo para analizarlo lo vemos posible; es más, lo sabemos porque hay otra gente que lo ha logrado de esta manera. Entonces surge la pregunta, ¿Si ellos pudieron, por qué yo no voy a poder hacerlo?
We must understand that there are many factors at play for these people to have achieved it before, among them I name some that stand out the most:
Experience of previous failed attempts.
Not trying meant failure anyway, there was no other option.
Just lucky, maybe if they had tried again, they would have failed.
Debemos entender que hay muchos factores en juego para que estas personas lo hayan logrado anteriormente, entre ellas nombro algunas que sobresalen más:
Experiencia de intentos fallidos anteriormente.
No intentarlo suponía fracaso de todas maneras, no había otra opción.
Simplemente suerte, quizás si lo hubieran intentado nuevamente, hubieran fracasado.
It's funny, because last Monday, I was due to renew one of the seafarers' courses on survival at sea, which includes firefighter training. Fire on a ship is considered the biggest catastrophe there can be, one must learn to put out the fire oneself, because in the middle of the sea it is very unlikely or almost impossible for the firemen to come before it is too late.
Es curioso, porque el Lunes pasado, me tocó renovar uno de los cursos de marineros sobre supervivencia en el mar, entre los cuales incluye la formación de bomberos. El fuego en un barco es considerado la mayor catástrofe que pueda haber, uno debe aprender apagar el fuego uno mismo, ya que en medio del mar es muy poco probable o casi nulo que vengan los bomberos antes de que sea muy tarde.
During this training you learn everything that is needed to deal with a fire on board, from equipment and evacuations to putting on a firefighter's suit and going to rescue and extinguish the fire.
Durante este entrenamiento aprendes todo lo que se necesita para lidiar con un fuego abordo, desde equipo y evacuaciones hasta ponerte el traje de bombero e ir a rescatar y apagar el fuego.
One of the things you should keep in mind, is that when you go in to put out a fire or rescue someone who has been trapped in the flames, is that no matter how well you know how to get to the scene, you should always do it by skirting the walls.
Una de las cosas que debes tomar en cuenta, es que cuando vas a entrar a apagar un fuego o rescatar a alguien que se ha quedado atrapado entre las llamas, es que no importa que tan bien sepas llegar al lugar, debes hacerlo siempre bordeando las paredes.
The reason for this is because when a room is on fire, full of flames and smoke, you can't see anything, your sense of direction is not the same, it is very easy to get lost even if you have lived all your life in that room, no matter how well you know it, with a limited air tank, heat everywhere, your visor full of smoke without being able to see anything and a water hose, make everything much more difficult than it normally is.
La razón de esto se debe a que cuando un cuarto está incendiado, lleno de llamas y humo, no se ve nada, tu sentido de orientación no es el mismo, es muy fácil perderse aunque hayas vivido toda tu vida en ese cuarto, no importa que tan bien lo conozcas, con un tanque de aire limitado, calor por todos lados, tu visor lleno de humo sin poder ver nada y una manguera de agua, hacen que todo sea mucho más difícil de lo que es normalmente.
Your life is in danger, and the lives of everyone else around you, but it's up to you to get the fire under control and/or rescue those who are trapped. Your time is limited and if you decide to take the fast track, you will most likely get lost and trapped with the others.
Tu vida corre peligro, y la de todos los demás alrededor, pero depende de ti poder controlar el fuego y/o rescatar a los que han quedado atrapados. Tu tiempo es limitado y si decides tomar el camino rápido, lo más probable es que te pierdas y quedes atrapado con los demás.
Being a firefighter is about solving, not giving more problems, that's why you should go stroking the wall even if it's a longer way, but it's safer, because on the way back, you just stroke the wall back to the exit, the same way you go in you come out.
Ser bombero se trata de solucionar, no de dar más problemas, por eso debes ir acariciando la pared aunque sea un camino más largo, pero es más seguro, porque en el regreso, solo acaricias la pared de regreso hasta la salida, de la misma manera que entras sales.
In life not only firefighters need to know that you have to go with one hand on the wall to get to your goal, we must always have one hand to pull us to the light while the other help us get to where we want.
En la vida no solo los bomberos necesitan saber que hay que ir con una mano en la pared para llegar a tu objetivo, hay que tener siempre una mano que nos saque a la luz mientras la otra nos ayudar a llegar a donde queremos.
