When it comes to writing it's better to stay away from rules at first and not expect anything and then something words flow. The moment I think about motive and purpose I lose the meat of what I wanted to write.
I can definitely relate to that; it's a double-edged sword in my experience. I think this will be fun — I'll try to brainstorm a few of the qualities I've noticed about creating freeform vs. with rules/constraints.
Freeform | Freeform | Ruled | Ruled |
---|---|---|---|
Pros | Cons | Pros | Cons |
Expansive | Chaotic | Orderly | Boring |
Surprising | Unrelatable | Archetypical | Impersonal |
Unique | Amateurish | Digestible | Unoriginal |
Experimental | Unimpactful | Rhythmic | Repetitive |
Bold | Strange | Conservative | Uninspiring |
Vulnerable | Unimpressive | Austere | Unapproachable |
Exciting | Anxious | Calming | Sleep-inducing |
Transcendent | Inscrutable | Immanent | Mundane |
Accelerated | Uncontrolled | Precise | Contrived |
Inspired | Paralyzed | Illuminated | Transparent |
Mysterious | Inauthentic | Pleasing | Distant |
Innovative | Pretentious | Traditional | Stagnant |
Individual | Egotistical | Universal | Avoidant |
Trailblazing | Insulting | Respectful | Cowardly |
Brilliant | Bizarre | Wizened | Lecturing |
Man, tables are the best! I might add more later. Peace!
Without exercise a body gets weak and your writing exercise here is exactly that... exercise.
