Let's Talk About Tags

in Proof of Brain4 years ago

Lately I've been curating posts in different tribes and it has become obvious that a good part of the users has no idea what tags are for and how these work.

Today I'm trying to explain a few things, hoping to help those who are willing to make the effort and improve.

Tags

What are tags?
Tags are a way to categorize your content, so that others can find it. The more relevant the tags are to the post, the more like-minded people will come across it. source

What tags should I use?
Try to use tags that are relevant to your post, and that will be popular for other people to browse. For example, "mytriptoalaska" may be relevant to your post, but readers are probably not going to go searching for that. Using "travel" would be a better choice for a tag in this case.
You can browse through commonly used tags using the "Explore" link, in the main menu.
Be mindful when choosing tags. If your tags aren’t related to your post, your post may get downvotes for mistagging. source

If you are having a hard time understanding the text above, let me simplify it for you. So if you're posting about gardening, you don't use #cooking, unless a good part of your post is about cooking.

You can also have community tags. You can check each community to see in the description what are the requirements for posting in the community, what tags you can use and so on.

There's a category of users who literally has no idea what community tags mean. There are certain communities where you see the majority of the posts naming all the curator groups in the tag section but nothing relevant to their post

Tagging curator groups is a wasted effort as they are not curating based on tags. Now that we have different communities, some are niche communities, others are more general, but each has its own curators. There's also OCD that has the incubator program helping different niche communities grow. These curators are curating manually, by checking content and also checking if the post is plagiarized or not.

Posting

You can choose the frontend you want to post from and the community as well. Some communities have their own frontend, like Proof Of Brain, Leofinance, Sportstalk, just to name a few. Which means using their frontend, your post will land in that community. However, things are not so simple.

Using another community's tag has some consequences.

source

This post for example has been posted from Proofofbrain frontend, but because the author used the #leofinance tag, it shows up on Leofinance as well. Which means if you're browsing Leofinance, you may wonder why is this post there, as it has nothing to do with finance. The answer is because the author used the #leofinance or #leo tag.

Another case where the user can't understand what finance means.

The most common explanation you get is they didn't know, which may be true but in most of the cases it isn't. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand what finance means and once you know your post has nothing to do with finance, using the tag intentionally is clearly abuse.

You often see people using tags of tokens that rewards you most. This is no coincidence, it is intentional.

Think Of The Consequences

Communities have been set p in order to categorize posts and to be easier to navigate on the blockchain. If you're new, you should browse the list of the communities we have on our blockchain and see which one fits your interests. You can be part of as many communities as you want as long as you respect the rules.

communities 4.jpg
source

Speaking of rules, you can check community rules by using PeakD, on the right side of the screen, each group has a description, rules and below the team members list. I suggest you take these rules seriously. Once you're caught abusing the rules, you can be muted and you lose the ability to post in that particular community, not to mention downvotes.

There are some general tags you can use in your post, regardless of the topic of your post. It worth using them as those tokens can build up in time.

If you'd like to learn more about how things work around here, here's the Hive.blog FAQ. Please read it.

Remember, we all want this place to grow and prosper. let's keep it clean. You don't want new users and/or investors to click the #leofinance tag and see recipes or dog f*cking videos.

Thanks a lot for the great info @erikah — it's really helpful. I understand why some people are not getting upvotes and while some are lucky to get upvotes (depending on the quality of Post and ability to attract others through their writings)

Sometimes getting voted depends on luck but mainly you have to work hard for it.

Yes, you're definitely right @erikah

Stay blessed

😂 😂 😂 That last part got me laughing so hard.... I love this article, wish I could give a 100% thumbs up 👍

I appreciate your great effort in explaining what the tags are in a post, most of us don't know like me when I first joined Hive.

I remember posting into a community and I got warned so warmly but I felt like I was attacked so I couldn't do it again. I make sure to use the right tags including the general one.

Thanks for this post, I hope more newbies see this and learn to give accurate posts.
Let me do a reblog on my own page 😊

Posted via proofofbrain.io

At first it can be difficult, which I understand but too many are committing abuse and then use the newbie card then play the victim.

I hop a few people still listen.

Which means if you're browsing Leofinance, you may wonder why is this post there, as it has nothing to do with finance. The answer is because the author used the #leofinance or #leo tag.

For this content, I think I can dive into the mind of the owner..... He is a wise fella

The account that will be voting him has Leo power, basically, the author wants some Leo too

Hehehehe..... Don't mind me, I am not being serious here..... Just joking around 🤣🤣🤣🤣

An informative post.

I hope everyone gets to see this so that when they get a down vote for violating any of the rules, they don't come out screaming and yelling.

Tags should always match what the post is about.

Like in your example, you don't use a leofinance tag for a dog article or a photography tag for money based articles.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

They usually come out screaming and yelling, unfortunately. I still hope in time we won't have so many abuse, although I know it's wishful thinking.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I hope so too.

Nice post.

LeoFinance is particularly bad these days. There seem to be endless gaming posts which have nothing about the financial aspects of the games in them. As a result I spend less time here than I used to.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I don't like gaming posts either and have to scroll through all of them every day, unfortunately.

I would appreciate some filter options, would make my life more easier.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying but I'm going to try to reply to your comment.

Muting abusers will work for me, but won't make the problem go away as their abusive posts will still be visible in the community for the rest of the members. Leofinance could do that, but their strategy is let the community take care of it, that's why we have downvotes. I'm using the option, but my stake is not high enough to deal with everyone and I'm not the community cleaner either.

Retaliation happens, but those who are retaliating are new with no stake at all, so they can't hurt me.

However, keeping this community clean should be in everyone's interest and should be a collective effort.

Nice one, thank you for the world of encouragement may God give you more grace to enlighting this community.

You're welcome!

tags are only good for hive-engine tokens ever since communities got implemented

Not exactly as even if you post in one community, using tags you can still get your post show up in another community.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

that's true for tribes, not a community, but that's where the token part of what I said comes in. I see "tribe" and "token" as the same thing when a token has a community. just my perspective

no idea what you mean. but I think communities are great and do the job better than tags. I have no complaints about either. communities could be further improved (like in the way they were originally planned) but I think it's a huge step up regardless

so maybe more like... I assume all topics are already better covered by communities, but even to those that don't, new communities are more likely to do the job well in the place of tags

Nice one . Oooh, I think the #leofinance tag is Hive's most abused tag, it is probably covered up in a basement like:

You're probably right!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I try to add tags so I can be found easily

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Yes, you should.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for this informative article.

You don't want new users and/or investors to click the #leofinance tag and see recipes or dog f*cking videos.

It is quite irritating to find something irrelevant when you search anything. It feels like the waste of time.

There are some general tags you can use in your post, regardless of the topic of your post. It worth using them as those tokens can build up in time.

I want to know what these tags are.

You can use neoxian, palnet, archon for example.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Ok. Thanks

You're welcome.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I learned that a while ago that tag abuse is a big deal here on hive. I have since tried to refrain my myself from mistagging

I guess I need to be even more cautious.

Posted via proofofbrain.io

Tag abuse is indeed a big deal for a very good reason. I guess you don't put your shoe wax in the kitchen cabinet, next to the salt and sugar, right? So why would be different here?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I got the message clearly

Thanks for sharing an informative article.

My pleasure.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Tags are very helpful!

But like you said we'll have to be very mindful of the tags we use.

Very informative post

Thanks so much for this :) What are the general tags that you would recommend for earning extra tokens❓

Personally I have been unsure of using community tags outside of the community without permission.

You can use neoxian, palnet, archon for example.

This is what I told a user earlier in this conversation.

Thanks so much :) I want to do things properly, and build my account

My pleasure. It's healthy thinking and the only way to go forward. Honesty and hard work, no shortcuts and cutting corners. Good luck!
