There are mushrooms that are so photogenic that no matter how many times I shoot them, I don't have enough. But even though I do like them, it is nice to find something new from time to time. And there is a lot new to find out there. One just has to look better. Or in a place you'd never think to find a shroom.
I went to see a big pond the other day, hoping to catch some birds that like to sit on the trees, bushes, and very tall grasses around. Typically, I saw none. Like if they knew I was coming all geared up.
But I did find these little guys!
Scutellinia patagonica
Is it though? I am pretty sure it is Scutellinia. But there are enough of those little orange mushrooms out there to keep me properly confused.
Scutellinia is a genus of cup-fungi in the family Pyronemataceae. The genus is widely distributed, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, and according to the Dictionary of the Fungi (10th edition, 2008), contains 66 species.

The area around is pretty sandy, but with large clay deposits (It used to be a clay mine. Now just a whole left filled with water), and this is where I found this one. More moist mix of sand, clay, and plant bits. Growing nicely in groups in an area of about 2 square meters. And only there.
Everywhere around, where sand was dominating, I found ink caps and the more common brown mushrooms.
And together with the little ones, there were some common ones that I have been seeing all around. Like protective umbrellas.
You can also see here how small the Scutellinia is. The largest ones were about 1 cm across. The ones under the brown mushrooms are even smaller. They are obviously younger as they do not have that little volcano in the center I noticed on some of the largest ones. I suppose that's the mature ones.

It looks huge when you look at them like that and after the photo with another species of mushroom you quickly noticed that they are very small. I had never seen one with such an orange color. Beautiful pictures
Yea... I knew adding a bigger mushrooms for the perspective will help. They were tiny.. and hundreds of them!
Yes you did well to put another p to compare them otherwise we could have believed that it was giant hahaha

You are very right, dear friend @ewkaw, the world of mushrooms always surprises us, to the extent that you explore new places, there will always be possibilities of discovering mushrooms never seen before.
I love what you have found, they have a very peculiar shape, and the color of their edges is striking.
Beautiful photographs, I appreciate you letting us know.
Have a beautiful afternoon
Thank you!
I am very happy with the find myself :)
Have a great Sunday!
Wow - that cluster of mushrooms in the first photo is so gorgeous. However they all are. This is certainly a special and beautiful species. Lovely colours.
Thank you! I saw few clusters like this there. This one was the biggest.
Wow! If you didn't wrote that there were mushrooms I was mistaken them to beautiful flowers😅 where as they are beautiful mushrooms. They must be very unique thier kingdom. I love them.
I had no idea what they were at first. First time I saw mushrooms like this. Was a pretty cool surprise :)
They look like cute tiny pumpkin slices 😍
Or gummy bears... flat gummy bears :P
Wow, they are so eyecatching and interesting looking! I had no idea they were so tiny until the comparison with the larger mushrooms. Don't think I've seen any like that around here.
Cool photos, as always!

Thank you! The colour made them visible. if they were brown I would never spot them :)
Looks like carrot slices 😁 are from Patagonia? 🤣
I am definitely blind. Because I don't see any around here.
Hahaha after a while even I don't know what I meant 😂
It looks like a very beautiful piece of carrot!
Hahaha little slices :)
I love the orange shrooms. I have never seen that color before and it is so pretty.
Yea, the orange is super pretty! :D
I love those little orange guys 🤩 I won’t help you with confirming the ID, but hey ho, I love looking and reading about any mushrooms, you know me!
I do know what you mean. Some fungi I just wanna capture over and over again. I might have a fungi problem 😂
Not only you....
Then I come back home from a photo trip and I see over and over the same type... but hey - they not the same mushrooms. not my fault there was so many of them :p
Not the same mushrooms! Also there is one strip of grass making it so different. Also 2 different personalities! Just same name! We should start calling them names like Wladyslaw, Helena, Josh to justify this addiction 😂
