It is time for another #fungifriday and I have some usual and strange sightings for you.
Here is a nice set of gem-studded puffballs. The Latin name is Lycoperdon perlatum and they are a decent edible if you can get them while they are still solid white on the inside. They cook really well in olive oil and spices and complement potatoes really well.
Here are some old and dried out ink caps. Most likely the common ink cap Coprinopsis atramentaria. These are technically edible but don't cook very well and have a bad reaction when taken with alcohol.
Here are some mica caps emerging from a tree stump. These are also edible but only cook well in soups. They also have a bad reaction if consumed with alcohol.
Here is some sort of cracked cap amanita. At first I thought it might be a lactarius but its gills didn't generate any milk when cut.
Here is a sad dried version of the mushroom in my neighbor's yard.
Also some dog vomit slime mold with cicada shells falling off the tree around it.
Speaking of cicada shells, there are thousands of them blowing around in the wind everywhere.
More are hatching everyday. There is a low level hum in the air as an ambient noise. Soon it will be as loud as a concert when they finish drying out.
Now for a strange sighting. Can you see something off about this sculpture?
As it turns out a bagworm has decided to make its cocoon on the ear of one of the figures. This is quite the earring. Now if only the cicadas could crawl all over this it would look quite strange.

Never heard of a bugworm (they dont occure in my area), and no, I did not notice the extra earring. Funny and cool find! - !BEER
They are interesting little larvae. Some will even construct little log cabins to pupate in
My wife was the one that spotted it, she is also good at spotting the morels in the forest.

Keep an eye out for bagworms up there, I think the more northern kind make a sort of log cabin bag that is stuck to the side of branches.
