The Hidden Life on the Walls: An Unexpected Fungi Find

I didn’t expect much from my walk around the village this evening, but something caught my eye as I passed the brick walls.

When I took a closer look, I was amazed at how many types of fungi were growing on the walls!

Surprising Fungi Homes!

The black one is Black Witches Butter.

Yellow mustard lichen

Possibly the Rock Firedot Lichen

Looks like the whitewash lichen.

I never thought fungi would grow on brick walls, but they find a way! The cracks and damp spots on the walls create the perfect place for them.

Looks like the Diploica Canescense

The fungi were everywhere and looked like patches of mould. Some blended into the wall, while others had bright colours that stood out.

Disc lichen, the whitish ones.

Look like the Common goldspeck lichen. Speckled around the post box.

It was incredible to see how many fungi were living there. They weren't growing in the soil or forest but on the hard brick!

Some were delicate, while others were tough and strong, together with the moss, holding on tight to their unusual home.

This discovery reminded me of how fungi can grow anywhere. Even in the middle of a village, these little organisms can find a place to live and thrive.

The fungi on the walls help break down organic matter and keep the environment healthy, even in an urban setting.

Look Closely, and You’ll See More!

Next time you’re out for a walk, take a closer look at the walls, trees, or even the pavement. Fungi might be hiding in the most unexpected places, and you’ll be amazed at what you find!

Have you ever spotted fungi somewhere unusual?

Have a lovely day, everyone,
