One of the things that I find liberating in my everyday activities on the internet is touch typing. It was not until I took the time to learn and have continued practicing daily ever since that I realised that it really is a skill one should hone, as it can 10x your productivity, especially by being proficient at it.
First off, this community exists because I felt there was a need for a space to foster interactions and camaraderie among typists on Hive and encourage beginners to take large strides towards acquiring touch-typing skills for themselves.
Touch typing is essentially a method of typing on a keyboard where the typist does so without looking at the keys. Opposed to the hunt-and-peck method, touch typing allows for a more seamless and efficient typing experience. And here are a few of the ways it can boost your productivity once acquired and practiced consistently:
Increased Typing Speed
Although speed depends greatly on practice, touch typing guarantees a more fluid and higher speed compared to the hunt-and-peck method, where one hunts (with their eyes) for each key they need and then presses with the nearest or most convenient finger.
The increase in speed with touch typing enables one to save time, meet deadlines, and communicate much better. For example, being able to use fifteen minutes to write a post with 700+ words on days with tight schedules can come in really handy. Imagine completing similar tasks in the same manner.
In conversations over the internet, being able to express and send in your thoughts via text quickly and efficiently goes a long way in providing a better experience interacting with people, especially in workplaces.
Efficient Multitasking
The fact that one doesn't have to look at the keyboard while typing allows for seamless transitions between different tasks, thus enabling one to multitask more efficiently.
Being able to quickly respond to messages in the middle of writing a post or an email is an example. Taking a quick look at something outside of your computer—like if your phone is actually plugged in—is another example.
Reduced Cognitive Load
Touch typing eliminates the need to look at the keyboard, and that allows one to concentrate more on the content being typed. And it helps to get better results.
Since my brain already knows where the keys are and I can basically type words without thinking about how to do that on the keyboard, it allows me to be more creative, expressive, and accurate with what I am typing. The quality of one's post on Hive can be greatly increased with the ability to concentrate more on their thought process.
The combined benefits of increased speed, efficient multitasking, and reduced cognitive load make touch typing a powerful skill to hone, as it can boost productivity across different aspects of work and daily activities. Interacting on Hive is much more efficient with it, as is creating content.

When I was younger, there was a computer game that I loved playing. I'm not sure if Microsoft owned it or not. The game had different scenarios where you had to type really fast without making any mistakes, or else you would lose that round. Obviously, you couldn't be looking down at the keys and up at the screen at the same time, and looking at the keys while typing would defeat the purpose of the game. It was so much fun! I wish we still had games like that.
This sounds like the famous Mavis Beacon that many of us played when we were kids. I don't remember my performance then, but I always enjoyed playing it as a kid then. Interestingly, such games still exist. Maybe people don't play them anyore or we just all grew up.
Tell me, how has your experience with being on Hive been lately?
yes Mavis Beacon. i loved that game. once again another proof that adulting is maybe most likely a scam. being on hive has been great. as i mentioned in my intro post, its really a go-at-your-pace show here. although that does have its cons becos some of us(me) work best under pressure. but im getting used to the whole planing and pacing thing.
You'll adjust to it in no time. The more time you spend here, the more invested in it you'd likely become.
My typing sleep is very slow and it's average 40 words per minute. I need to improve it. So that I will be able to save some time. Thanks for suggesting and your post related to typing inspire me a lot.

olujay, intishar sent you LUV. 🙂 (2/3) tools | trade | connect | daily
Made with LUV by crrdlx.
I don't think 40 words per minute is too low. Olujay here started with less than 10 words per minute, and with intentionality and consistency, he boosted to 80 words per minute that same year.
@initshar, I believe you can get better with time. Try touch-typing exercises, play games, and blog about your progress and how you feel in this community.
I need to practice more and more to improve the timing and I will try my best. I am just inspired and obviously, I will share about it here. I am inspired to hear his progress and I am sure I will also progress. It's time to take the thing seriously.
That's exactly more like it. You see how much support your getting now? That's exactly what this community is for—to help us encourage ourselves.
Man, you're doing awesome to have 40 WPM typing speed. That's sufficient to go about your daily online activities. Since you're going to work more on it, I want to indulge you to share your beginning and progress here in this community. I am very glad to have inspired you to do so, so I look forward to walking the journey with you.
I never regretted every moment I played Mavis Beacon when I was between the ages of 7 and 8. It was around this age that I started playing chess, and I was good at it, as those were the only two games on my dad's laptop.
While in junior secondary school, I had a typing speed of 50–60 words per minute, and I was just about 12 to 13 years old. I could remember that there was a time some computer guys came to my school to teach us about computer stuff, and they were amazed to see how well I typed.
The guy had to ask me how long I had known how to type, and I told him it had been a very long time. I didn't take my typing too seriously, so there isn't that much of a difference in my speed then and now. Just that, I am now around 80 to 100 words per minute now.
Kind sir, the difference between 100 and 60 is 40. Some people are praying and fasting for that level of speed. 😅
I remember playing Mavis Beacon a lot as a kid, but I really don't think I was dexterious with it like you were, and neither do I remember my top speed then. I don't even care as long as I learned it now that I a much older, thanks to a very good
friendbrother of mine, YOU.Sir, with this power at your finger tips, you can keep gracing our community like this. Let the power flow.
yeah brother... Let the power flow in his Grace!
See this man 😅
I have tried several times not to look at the keys while typing but I don't think I can yet. I don't know my speed but I feel I get faster each day.
Maybe I will have to practice touch typing like that. Any ideas on how??
It'll take time to get used to typing by feeling and not looking. Take it slow when you want to practice. Look if you need to look. The truth is, the more you practice the right way and consistently, you'll get used to the keys soon enough, and then you'll be getting faster by the day. It's not about speed, though, but accuracy.
If you have a PC, you can use typingtest.com and find their typing course. It's a great way to get started. When you get started, feel encouraged to share about your your beginning and progress here in this community as it would help you stay commited to learning.
This is really nice. Being able to write well and fast too will surely leave room for other activities in life. I type fast, and it's the same with reading, though I have not had it in mind to give myself a time for typing, lol. I just ... write!
Hello dearest fashionable dreemer. Another beautiful day is here. Beautiful because you are alive, and your presence is what makes life enjoyable. Pypt is happening today, and it'd be nice seeing you grace us with your presence as that honey like voice of yours sweetens our heart. Have a good day, sunshine and shine bright! I waltzed in from #dreemport, for I am an amazing #dreemer. An awesomely made #dreemerforlife.
That's really cool that you read fast as you type fast. I take a little more time when reading most times to really process. Maybe we'll see you in this community one day?
Anyway, thank you for your reminders. I wasn't around for PYPT.
I assimilate too when reading fast, haha. I don't know what my fast is to some people. It may be their normal. Hehe.
Can I write a time myself... just anything?
It's okay. Next week awaits ya.
Not sure what you mean by "time."
Lol... I meant time myself. Like Freewriters counting system kinda thing.
You know the 5 minute wrote challenge we did last year
hmm...I am not sure I am familiar with that challenge.
Oh, I guess you didn't join in. There's a time counter, and you are asked to write for 5 minutes. It could be anything. Poem, fiction, nonfiction , lifestyle posts, and all. Hehe.
Wow, so many communities on Hive. Just getting to know about touch typing now. This is good and learning it will help increase one's typing speed.
Thanks for sharing this.
#dreemerforlife
Well, I only created this one about two months ago. I have plans for it, but it'll take a long while to kickstart them.
Really? This is great. Well done.
You have a huge dream bro and I remembered the first time I read about your typing progress. I am so addicted to typing with my phone and taking the challenge is kind of difficult but I am very much interested.
There are benefits to this and you have stated them clearly. Well done bro
Thank you, man. I would be very delighted to see you take the leap to add to your phone typing skills by delving into touch typing. I created this community particularly for people to grow together as I know that helps a long way. You have that now. Whenever you're ready, I'll be ready.
Reading this post made me remember a time when I told myself I would improve my typing skills till I stopped working on it. I think I should start it up again.
Thanks for sharing this.
#dreemerforlife
You would totally love it if you start it up again. This time, there's this community to share you progress and receive support and encouragement as you watch others share theirs too.
I think one person can't know all the communities in hive.
