Well no, ok fine... it's totally my own fault but for now I'm going to try blaming coffee because what might befall me later today will possibly be easier to handle if I can at least possibly blame coffee for it.
Last night I did not sleep well. That was not coffee's fault, that has it's own variety of reasons and coffee will not be held accountable. I had about two hours of sleep overall and today has not been particularly pleasant as a result. I've still managed to function more or less but only because of coffee...coffee that I might just regret.
The problem was that somewhere in the vicinity there is a plumbing problem that the municipality has been working on since yesterday morning. I didn't have water for some of yesterday but it did come back on in the late afternoon and I stupidly assumed that the problem had been rectified. It hadn't.
This morning I shuffled my way to the kitchen in a kind of zombified way, swollen eyes all blurry and I tried to fill up the kettle. I only managed to get two cups of coffee out of the kettle before I ran out of water. Insert your favourite form of profanity here, it will suffice. I was only a few hours into the day when my headache set in and set me off on a downward spiral. I became desperate as I was in the middle of a website backup and then I remembered I had a reserve 5Litre bottle of water in the cupboard. So I took it out and had a look at it.
It wasn't a sealed bottle of water. Looked okay though. Smelled okay too. What could possibly go wrong - right? This sentence should be erased from my existance because it's the most idiotic way to justify doing something that could potentially kill me and is generally accompanied by a shrug of my shoulders. I poured water into the kettle and turned it on. Made the cup of coffee. Drank it with painkillers.
I'm still alive and I haven't suffered any side effects just yet but I have a suspicion that I might regret this decision making process later. Especially seeing as I have to drive for 2 hours in the morning.
Have you ever done something this moronic out of pure exhaustion, desperation and stupidity? I'm definitely not the brightest spark in the box and probably won't last long when the zombie apocalypse sets in. I still have 4.8Litres of bottled water left... what could possibly go wrong - right?
Oh my! I hope you're well. Your prose made me chuckle, as I too am one to make questionable decisions, moronic even, when in a state of exhaustion. Hell, I don't even need to be tired to do so haha
I'm part of that small percentage of people that get headaches triggered by virtually anything: dehydration, lack of sleep, too much food, too little food, lots of coffee, no coffee, crying too much, laughing too hard... Sounds awful I know, but I do my best to keep them at bay. I succeed... Most of the time.
Yesterday, for example, I was very sleep-deprived and made the brilliant choice to have coffee after 5 p.m. You see, I've dabbled with the art of being a barista plenty of times in the past, so I make a damn good latte, and I've learned how to replicate it at home with the equipment I have. A coffee was drunk, and yours truly lost the chance to get a good night's sleep due to poorly-timed caffeine ingestion.
But it was so good! I regret nothing haha
Yeah, excellent approach, make them believe you're not prepared. I'm sure you are though ;)
Hey Eliza
I enjoy the way you write too, this was fun to read although I did find myself wincing at the headaches, that really can't be good to deal with at all, but I admire the fact that you very stoically know how to deal and just keep going - we all have to do that at times through pain and illness and sometimes idiotic choices like mine the other day hahaha. Luckily I actually survived that although I have now self dubbed as "Stupagirl" from the moronic decision.
I would be keen on one of those latte's one day, sounds decent!
Well, I wouldn't want to show all my cards now would I? That would spoil half the fun. I'll just wing it TankGyrl style for sure
If you trust whoever bottled it / had it after the seal was broken, you are fine. Water doesn't spoil like other things, thankfully...

Hi @wrestlingdesires
It was filled up by my brother in law who I do trust. Seeing as it was in the back of the food cupboard, I figured it was as best a choice I had... and I'm fine. The coffee was totally worth possibly not being so fine :)
I'm glad you are ok :) There shouldn't be any problem at all from water, so I would have used it too.
!PIZZA !ALIVE !LOL
Oh dear, when I read this I thought at first, gosh, so this happens in other parts of the world too...but only then checked your profile and saw you're from SA! I know the feeling of finding that open bottle of water and not knowing how long it's been standing there!
What's worse, no water or no electricity? Definitely water!
I cannot start the day without a cup of dark roast coffee, so that is one thing I make sure I never run out of, but when the tap runs dry, well...not a good start to the day!
Hello Lizzie
Thank you so much for the message. Oh yes, well I do think the load shedding is definitely a recognisability factor of South Africa. It made me glad knowing that it hasn't been just me with the water bottle - clearly you and I value our coffee greatly, kindred spirits for sure!
I hope you have a lovely Wednesday 🙂
Hey @andrastia,
I take it you're still alive and well, right? 😁
We all have those horrible nights of no sleep when we least expect it, and definitely when we NEVER need it... which is always!
What would we do without coffee, huh?
Did they actually rectify the plumbing situation?
Hey Milly
I'm still alive and twitching...not kicking because I'm too tired lol. Yes I know, it was a desperate action but after the night I had, well I think you understand. The water is back on so I'm going to make sure that I have enough for tomorrow in case it's off again. I think I learned my lesson.
I'm glad you made the long drive though.
I never slept well myself, and I have been struggling to sit upright all day.
A late afternoon coffee in order methinks:)
I am sure you will live. You did boil the water didn't you? 😊
Lol yes, I think that was my saving grace. Still here. Still drinking coffee albeit with fresh water now 😄
😊👍
If it turns out bad, it turns out bad, but going without coffee is not an option!!!!! lololol
Exactly @papacrusher you understand! I possibly would have been arrested for some rage crime without coffee. It was actually ok though, I'm still fine 😁
Oh dear, it seems that you are having one of the days where nothing seems to go right. Thank God, you have your coffee.
Hello @positivesteem
Thanks for writing, it has been a very long day but without coffee, who knows right? I hope you had a better day.
Oh yes...the stories I could share when I was younger. One time (long before I was responsible father/husband - I think?), after a long day of beers for a going away party that started at 1030am, I snuck into an office conference room and took a 2 hour nap. No one noticed me (at least as far as I know, lol), woke up, ran to the nearby tavern to meet up with the going away party, and kept it going until 2 AM. All of that was done on four hours of sleep the previous night - Saturday morning was a rough one
Hahaha that sounds like a fun time was had by all - one of the numerous reasons I don't drink...hangovers are horrific. I like the way you prefaced this with "I think" lol.
It might give you superpowers :OD
Hey there's an idea...knowing my luck it is highly unlikely but I like your optimism lol
:OD
Ill speak for Boom, and just say that we would both still rock that coffee. Slightly old water or whatever. Superpowers are the bonus. Spideyboom and The Quacktupus to the rescue.
Hope you had a good end to the day and better sleep.
I like the sound of Spideyboom and The Quacktupus. See could use our axes to right wrongs!!! :0D

Enjoyed reading your post. 😅
Hi Esther
Lol I am actually still alive and kicking so I think that water was still ok. The water came back on about an hour ago so I should be ok for tonight. I think I'll fill that bottle with fresh water now just in case :)
Thanks for stopping by. Have a good day/night
I like to think that many of the poor decisions of my youth are due to my chronic lack of sleep.
If the water is boiled, there's a good chance you'll be fine.
