In the recent years, the Coffee industry has witnessed a noticeable change where Robusta coffee had been once considered as a lesser glamorous sibling to Arabica. The current trending demand for this lesser known sibling makes me wonder what factors maybe driving the new popularity. I’m sure I’m not the only coffee planter who was wondering about it.
Could it be the matter of the cost or the taste, or could it be something much more deeper that we haven’t noticed? As the global coffee consumption pattern involves, we need to start understanding the reason behind the rise of robusta and the valuable insight it has towards the future in the coffee market. From the economic advantages to the changing customer preferences, let’s dive into why this lesson known sibling is suddenly in the spotlight and how is it shaping the coffee landscape.
I think we can all agree that the primary factor that is driving such an increasing demand is because of the cost efficiency and we cannot deny how amazing this coffee plant is more resilient than compared to the Arabica species. Not only can stand the climatic condition and be resistant towards the pest and diseases. Generally, the yield is more in terms of beans per plant. Making the robusta beans cheaper to produce and more affordable for both the traders and the consumers. In the world, where inflation and economic uncertainties are becoming the norm, the lower price point offers a significant advantage.
The instant coffee market has also seen a substantial growth, particularly in regions like Asia and Africa. This specific species is also known for its strong flavour and high caffeine content which are stable in the instant coffee production. The convenience and speed of preparation also offers attractive option for busy lifestyle, the more popular instant coffee becomes the demand for these beans will continuously rise thus fuelling the global market presence.
Espresso aficionados play a role in creating the perfect cup from these delicious beans. Robusta is often blended with Arabica in espresso blends, to enhance the crema and add body to create a robust cup. The higher the caffeine content, distinctive bitter hints of Robusta in flavour profiles like chocolatey, nutty, caramel compliments a smoother and sweeter notes of Arabica. Resulting in a balanced and flavourful espresso with the growing global appreciation for espresso beverages, Hence Robusta’s demand is naturally climbing.
Robusta coffee contains twice as much caffeine contains Arabica. Seeking the customers to get a stronger energy boost with the high caffeine content, providing a pot with anti-microbial properties which can give a very good benefit from a health perspective.
That’s about it for me today. The benefits keep on adding up with this Bold coffee. Have you ever had 100% Robusta coffee? Did you have it as an espresso blend or instant coffee? Let me know in the comments and thank you for reading.

Hi, @coffeenlove.
How interesting all this information! In my country, almost all the coffee we get in the commercial circuits is Arabica, as I suppose happens in many countries around the world. However, I think, as your post shows, this reality is changing and an important factor is that the taste of coffee lovers has become more complex, they are willing to more plastic taste adventures, if I may say so.
I myself, who am a fairly average consumer, find myself looking for something more on the labels of the coffee I buy.
Greetings.
May you continue to have wonderful coffee adventures.
