The $10,070 habit

Statistics show that of those who contract the habit of eating, very few survive.

- George Bernard Shaw -

I have a habit of eating. I acquired it way back in the distant past and, as most habits do, it has stuck with me.

It's not a bad habit of course, eating I mean, although some eating habits could be deemed as such. Generally speaking my eating habit is of the totally legit variety rather than the leshit variety and I'm pretty certain I'll continue to engage in the habit for quite some time to come as the consequences of not doing so could be dire.

I was thinking about my eating habits today after a conversation with a work colleague and, more specifically than my actual diet habits, about the foods I regularly eat, my go-to food choices. I decided to hit a café, as usually happens in the middle of my day, and those contemplations remained throughout my visit and my consumption of one of my food habits.

Café staple

Fortunately, here in Australia, most café's and coffee shops carry a wide array of foods to complement the beverages also on offer. Depending on where a person is, the food can differ greatly of course and some is better than others although there's one staple food a person can almost be guaranteed to bump into at virtually any café in the country...The croissant.

As I ate my ham and cheese croissant today I began to count how many I had consumed in my lifetime. [It took a while.]

Seventeen gazillion, four hundred and ninety seven bongzillion, three hundred and five bazjillion croissants is not even close to the real number and, if I'm honest I can't count that high anyway. I did a quick calculation though, and from the day I turned seventeen to today there's 1831 weeks so I'm going to average it out to one per week...1831 croissants.

$10,070 habit

Using $5.50 as an average price for each ham and cheese croissant means over ten thousand dollars worth of the buttery, flakey yumminess that are croissants have been consumed by me. Come on, how can you not be impressed! [or should I feel ashamed of myself]

We all have eating habits and for me a café, coffee and croissants just seem to go well together and whilst I make other choices as well, the croissant is typically my first choice. It is comfortable, dependable and it's rare to come across one done badly, although it's happened.

It was kind of cool to work out the approximate number of croissants I've eaten in my life and whilst it's a very ballpark figure it's interesting to turn it into a number and dollar figure; slightly confronting also. I wonder what your figure is? If you have a go-to café food do the sums and let me know in the comments below what the figures are and what the food is.

You are half human, half croissant. I should have known🤣🤣

I remember hearing Sadghuru, a kind of spiritual mentor, talking about a banana. You eat the banana as it helps you get nutrients. So the banana becomes you. Are you a banana or a human hahaha. We are piles of flesh formed because of all of the bananas and croissants we have been eating🤣

I'll be honest with you Mary, I'm a particularly tasty croissant as well! It is widely known.

Hahahaha you always have a great sense of humour too!

The question is, if you have not eaten that croissant every day, how much would you have spent on eating the alternatives, maybe way more? Any guess? You can try as an experiment, to avoid for one week that lovely routine. A gruesome experiment, I know.

What a magnificently gluttonous experiment this would be! I can only imagine the complex scientific research and mathematical equations that would be required. Let me ponder this potential experiment and see if my waistline and heart could take the stress!

Hello Galen,
I was gonna say, "you are what you eat" but I see that's already pointed out in the comments. I also acknowledge your declaration that you are delicious😁...everyone likes tasty things, right?

I do love crossaints. I tend to have them plain with butter when I am home, but I've had delightful sandwiches too, and I will remember this post whenever I eat crossaints again, and I'll jazz it up a bit:)

I'm many other things, but I'm certainly a croissant. 🤣

I believe you! I'm guessing that you are part pizza but are you part hotdog too? ...because I like jumbo ones 🤣

More of fish and chips and (this weekend) hot cross buns(s).

Oh, I love hot cross buns.😋

I might be a chocolate Easter egg also. Maybe two.

Wow, adding up the number of croisssnts you’ve eaten in your life is an interesting data point! And now I know that when numbers get really high, it gets into the bongzillions. 😂

Lol...Here in Australia that's a typical measure of a big number.

Actually, it's not and has probably never been used before. Sounded good though. 🤣

That's a pretty funny activity to do (calculating any one in particular food you've eaten over a lifetime). I never ate croissants in Canada because they were never any good and I didn't understand the hoopla over them. But here in France I eat a lot of them. I'm in the land of pastries and I'm definitely making the most of it.

Good choice on breakfast/lunch sandwich. It looks like a good one.

On a related topic, have you ever tried intermittent fasting (fasting for 1-2 days)? It's not easy because of (as you put it) the "habit" of eating, but it makes you feel amazing.

I've been to France many times and love their pastries! I didn't know you were there to be honest. Now officially jealous.

Intermittent fasting...I do this every day. In between breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and evening snack I fast. Oh, also when I'm sleeping too. 😉

Seriously though, as a diabetic, not eating like that wouldn't be very good.

lmao

Yeah I suppose diabetes would complicate things.

I have a few concepts that help me do what I have to, I just don't want to share them here as my personal health isn't blockchain-worthy. The fasting thing though, I know it's benefits but just cannot do it.

The last couple years we have been gradually transformed our house into a gourmet cafe and delicatessen. We really can't afford the prices to eat out any more so our 10,000 dollars goes to feed four.

I'm also eating a lot more vegetables. Half of this bibimbap came from my garden:

Yep, I do the same! Grow my own vegetables and herbs and prefer to stay in than go out. I'm out occasionally though, when I can't avoid it. 😊

That's a nice looking meal you have there!

Thanks to this post I now have to find a cafe worth visiting, go get a proper cup of coffee and some dessert. It's been a while since I've last "treated myself" with a proper cup of coffee and dessert haha. ☕️

It's always coffee time!

I'm sipping on some homemade coffee right now, while I type this reply hahaha.

Hmmmmm it’s gotta be cheesecake and coffee for me. Hmmm I think when we reach Leicester this week thats my mission at the castle gardens floating pontoon mooring. Cheesecake and coffee homecoming, oh yeah. I reckon my cheesecake dollar amount might be quite high also :)

Haha, you and your cheesecake. I'll be honest, way back when, my discovery of your love of cheesecake brought me to the realisation that you're a man of quality and good taste.

Put it i. Your diary, breakfast 19th April, cheesecake and coffee, canal Leicester. We also have access to Castle Gardens Park before it opens as our mooring and waterways key gives us access. Hmmmm formulating a post as we speak

I'd be there if I could my bro. Post it though!

Absolutely. I never used to like going back to my hometown but now I enjoy it. I think returning by boat makes it more fun and unique. Plus my mate runs 2 pubs….helps

That number of yummy deeee-lish-ous croissants at an average of three burps per croissant equals 5493 thundering belches...

I knew I could count on you to add some hard hitting and relevant scientific data.

..."relevant scientific data."

Key word "Relevant..."

Similar to reality.

The Reality of it is... We BOTH love us some light flaky croissants.

And we both burp and fart...

true story...

I've found it's best not to calculate how much things like bullets, supplements and veterinary care cost in the long run. How's things down under? Are they still being tyrannical down there?

Hey mate, it's been a minute or two!

Yeah, counting ammunition, anything gun related is only ever going to highlight the cost which, is always high. Best to ignore it and keep shooting. And veterinary costs? How the hell do they get away with charging so much?

All good here, I mean me. Just living life, getting shit done. The government. Well, same as always. We might be at war with China soon, so that's something different. I mean real war, not this faux economic one we're in. Could get lively. Still, I'll have good cause to break out some of the old gear and operate militia-style I guess...Until they drop a mortar round on my head. Good times.

I hope you're well mate.

You write so well, I immediately wanted a croissant with ham and cheese)

That's good, I own a croissant factory.

Not really.

Oh, the flaky, delicately sweet pastry, with butter or another delectable treat sandwiched inside. Who could resist?

I have to agree, you are definitely a croissant

I would have to say...apples! There have been countless, and I mean countless of them in my lifetime. We had apple orchards growing up and eat one almost every day. Many of mine were free! :)

That is a considerable amount of money, but, you cannot put a price on yummy goodness.

Lol...I'm glad people see me for what I am. A croissant. 😊

And you're an apple? It's a legit thing to be I think. There's so many varieties that you can afford to have many different personalities! So handy.

You just made my day until I suddenly felt a little like Cybil. :))

Thanks, Galen! Hope you had a great day.

Day-making for others does so in return for me. I'm weird like that. 😁

😁 It definitely works for you.
