Rustik Coffee
Specialty Coffee
Av. Italia 1439 Módulo 1
Providencia, Región Metropolitana, Chile

Recently I was in the city of Santiago de Chile for the first time, trying to prove to myself and to the whole world that a city as big and as rich in culture and history can't stay away from good gastronomy.

I remember with humor the warnings and refusals I received when I mentioned, before my arrival, that I would like to go to a good coffee shop in the city and have a nice time with some friends. I was told not to expect to find a good coffee in Santiago, that instead I could always count on enjoying very good infusions such as the famous mate, but that there was not a wide coffee culture.

One thing is that historically the Chilean citizen is not a fan of drinking coffee, but that does not mean that the world ceases to be versatile and innovative. Generalizing preferences to such an exaggerated extent has never been an option that interests me. That is why the fact that it is not a typical product doesn't seem to me to be an impediment for them to have particular places where those who appreciate the importance of a good bean can find their place.

So I set out to investigate the proposal of specialty coffee shops in the city, to prove for myself how true the warnings I had been given were. After a brief but successful search, I was reassured to find that, as in most cities I had visited, there were at least three or four alternatives, so I found one that turned out to be quite wonderful.

Rustik Coffee is a small and cozy specialty coffee shop that has been serving the city of Santiago for some years now, so I was surprised that some of my acquaintances, who are very knowledgeable in the world of coffee, didn't know of its existence.

It is true that it is a little hidden inside the Paseo Estación Italia, which is a kind of small shopping mall, but it is located in the attractive Barrio Italia, a very busy area for its wide gastronomic and entertainment offer.

The facilities are limited to a small stand where the baristas serve and a space on one side, where there is a small area with very ethnic decoration and some tables to sit and taste the coffee, which I didn't remember to take a picture of.

Customers order directly from the bar, and in the back they have displayed the available filtering methods and different coffee offers, they also have a display stand with an interesting range of desserts if you want to accompany your drink with a treat.

I had come to visit the place with a friend first thing in the morning, since I had a very tight itinerary during my brief stay in the city, so the target was to focus on the coffee and not on the complements, so we didn't consider the desserts.

The attention was pleasant from the very first moment, while I was asking them about some methods that I had seen promoted in their social networks and that I saw exposed in the background, the attendants remained cordial and willing to inform us about any detail of our interest, besides being concerned about our preferences to offer us the coffee that pleased us the most.

They told us the characteristics of the coffee they were using at that moment, a Honduran - Marcala La Paz coffee provided by Singular Coffee Roasters, a company established in the same Barrio Italia* that has guaranteed them at all times a high quality coffee.

Immediately I told them that I had gone there because I wanted to try their coffee with a Chemex so they were really enthusiastic about it and assured me that I would be able to appreciate perfectly the excellent characteristics of the coffee that they would prepare for us.

On the other hand, my friend always drinks her coffee with milk and until now she hadn't had the chance to go to a specialty coffee shop, so she was a bit worry about drinking her coffee without sugar, the attendant explained to her that she would notice when she tasted it that there was no need to ruin the taste of the coffee with any additive, but she wasn't really convinced until she tried it.

While our drinks were being prepared, we took some time to exchange ideas regarding the different preparations of coffee and the variables that had an influence on whether or not the result was pleasant . It was then when he confirmed something I had heard a lot about and that is that in most occasions when he was offered a coffee at a local citizen's house, it was usually instant coffee.

No wonder they don't have a good concept of drinking coffee considering that they usually prepare it with industrial and instant brands. Anyway, knowing that there are places like Rustik Coffee in the city is a good way to realize that there is a change in the way of appreciating coffee. Santiago is a very cosmopolitan city, so it is likely that this has influenced a little in addition to the sustained economic progress that my companion told me about.

We waited a little over 10 minutes until they brought our order to the table where we were chatting, not surprising when you opt for a drip method, so I knew we would have to wait a bit for it.

My coffee was laid out in the Chemex carafe with an approximate amount of 250 mL. I was able to dispose of a couple of cups and offered my friend a sip so she could appreciate the body of the coffee without being mixed with the milt. I got a very aromatic drink, whose flavor was a bit reminiscent of chocolate and had an interesting acidity. I was fully satisfied.

My friend also enjoyed her *Latte very much and didn't miss the sugar at any time. This coffee has a value of 3,600 CLP which would be about $4.50 and the Chemex has a value of 4,000 CLP approaching $5.00.

After drinking our coffees we stayed a while longer chatting and more people began to arrive, so I could see that there are indeed people who go there frequently to order their coffee to take away or sit and read for a while.

I had the intention of ordering an espresso or some other preparation but the time passed quickly and I had to settle for just one coffee, although it was enough to feel satisfied with this discovery and recommend it to my friends who live in Chile.

Rustik Coffee has a wide range of preparations, not only specialty coffees but also other preparations based on coffee and tea. We could also see when we left that it is possible to go there for lunch. Definitely a very good option when in the Chilean capital.

Thanks for dropping by!

The first thing I noticed was the Chemex, I think that really shows their commitment and investment in their café. Looks like it's really paid off. Great find

I liked being able to get a good impression of the coffee offer in the city, it is always necessary to do some research. hahaha

You discovered a really lovely rustic place. I love the Chemex method for coffee-making, it’s so ritualistic. The coffee cups are simple and look robust. A very charming experience.

Indeed, a place with quality product and very pleasant atmosphere. I don't know if my low expectations before going contributed to the pleasant surprise, but compared to many similar places I have seen, this one could never fail to be among the top.

I loved the mugs they use, I considered asking them if it was handmade or their origin but time played against me, good that you noticed.

The Chemex and the cups complement each other nicely. I like what you say about the place and it's really worth it sometimes for you to go and explore somewhere for yourself, despite what you might read about the place.

I'm sorry you forgot to take that photo of the coffee, it happens to me everytime.

It's always such a pleasure to see you stop by:)))Yeah, there were some good posts, heh-13.jpg

Thank you very much for take some of your time and read this experience, as you say, checking things by ourselves is always gonna be the best way to experience the reality and be able to make a concrete opinion.

I'm glad to know that there are many Chemex lovers around here hahaha. Regarding the photos I'm always very aware of them, but this time I was 100% on vacation and apparently I relaxed a lot hahaha.

Yay! 🤗

hahaha is that spresso coffee, whether it is cheap or expensive, cannot be used to convince someone of anything. To me from time to time I feel like drinking it, but it still scolds me, I have always thought that coffee is made for smokers to atone for their sins hahaha. I do not end up being guided by the issue of palates, I think the important thing is that you enjoy what you try, whatever it is, but it is true that industrialized products poison our taste with additives hahaha so it never hurts to try to return to elemental flavors.

I have read of some places in ccs where you have this type of coffee makers, I don't know how expensive it is, but if you ever dare to experiment I'll be glad to give you some information hahaha.

Hi @ninaeatshere , it is the fourth time I have heard this opinion about coffee in Chile, legend has it that most coffees are instantaneous and of course they will never taste the same as a coffee like the one we prepare in Venezuela, but I am glad that You have persisted and achieved this cafeteria which offered you a good experience, which you can recommend to your acquaintances and I will also take it into account because I plan to travel to Santiago in a few months, greetings, thanks for sharing your experience.

Ooooh how nice, I'm so glad this could help you as a guide in your trip to Santiago, I'll be sharing some more things I tried in the city and they are really worth it.

I think if you give this place a try you won't regret it and if you get to go I hope to read your opinion about it, I would love to know.

Thank you very much for reading this post and best wishes for your trip, will it be just for vacation?

Hoola sorry for my late reply, well so far my trip is only for vacation, thanks

Beautiful post @ninaeatshere
Our Latino communities love coffee.

Thank you Emilio, it is indeed so, having the best coffee producer in the world at hand, it cannot be otherwise.

Prioridades y esas cosas.

Thank you Jesus for appreciating my words. The truth is that when one begins to understand a little the concept of specialty coffee begins to see these methods of elaboration more common, what happens is that we always leave it to the barista to take care of it and we are content to drink what they serve us hahaha. Priorities.

I like the coffee shop theme and how they served the coffee
