You ever have one of those moments where you’re standing in a forest, camera in hand, and the world just feels cinematic? The air is thick with fog, the trees fade into an ethereal blur, and for a second, you’re convinced you’re in a Ridley Scott film? Yeah, that’s the fog I love.
Then there’s the other kind of fog—the one that rolls into your mind like an overfed cat plopping onto your keyboard, shutting down all productivity. The mental fog. The brain haze. The “why did I walk into this room?” existential crisis that hits at random. That’s the fog I hate.
And today, we’re talking about both.
The Fog I Love: Nature’s Softbox of Pure Cinematic Bliss
As a photographer, fog is the cheat code for instant mood. You could be in the most boring forest on Earth, but add a little mist, and suddenly it’s a mystical dreamscape where elves are about to drop some ancient wisdom. Fog softens harsh light, deepens colors, and adds layers to an image that make it feel infinite.
These shots? Taken with my Fujifilm X-T2 and XF 18-55mm f/2.8—because when you’re dealing with fog, you want a lens that can handle contrast and still give you crisp details in the foreground while everything else fades into the void. And the X-T2? Still a beast.
The beauty of fog photography is that it forces you to slow down. You can’t just snap and go. You have to feel the scene, embrace the stillness, and let the mist guide the composition. It’s the kind of creative process that reminds you why you fell in love with photography in the first place.
And when you nail that shot—the one where the fog hugs the trees just right, where the path disappears into mystery—you feel like a damn wizard.
The Fog I Hate: The One That Traps You in a Productivity Black Hole
Now, let’s talk about the other fog. The one that doesn’t make your photos better. The one that makes you stare at your computer screen for 20 minutes, wondering if you should start that project or scroll Instagram for the 17th time today.
Mental fog is the creative assassin. It sneaks up on you, convincing you that “just five minutes” of distraction won’t hurt. Before you know it, you’re deep in a Wikipedia hole about why pigeons bob their heads when they walk. (No? Just me?)
Unlike real fog, which enhances a scene, mental fog destroys momentum. It’s that weird in-between state where you’re not fully resting, but you’re also not getting anything done. And the worst part? You know it’s happening, but you can’t seem to shake it.
So, how do you fix it? Simple. Move.
Seriously. Get up. Walk. Stretch. Splash some cold water on your face. Change your environment. Your brain is a pattern-recognition machine, and when it gets stuck in a mental loop, breaking the pattern is the fastest way out.
For me, grabbing my camera and heading outside is the ultimate fog destroyer. Because nothing clears your mind like actually stepping into the fog you love.
The Takeaway: Use One Fog to Kill the Other
The irony? The best way to cure mental fog is to chase real fog. Nature has a way of resetting your brain, reminding you that the world is bigger than your to-do list.
So, if you’re feeling stuck, lost in that productivity haze, do yourself a favor—grab your camera, go outside, and let the fog you love clear out the fog you hate.
Trust me. Works every time.
