In my post about the Passo di Giau couple of weeks ago, I said I visited that place in the Dolomites again a week later, and here's the promised post about this trip.
Hiking in the Dolomites
Passo di Giau to Lago Federa
On October 31, 2022, I got up quite early and drove towards South Tyrol, Cortina d'Ampezzo and then up to Passo di Giau. It was about 10am when I arrived on the pass, parked my van and climbed up the little hill behind the small pond where I took a few photos of the surrounding mountains, but please don't ask me about their names or correct me if I have named a mountain wrong.

It was an awesome Autumn day and so I decided to hike a little further towards the Lago Federa. At this time I didn't know that I would do the complete hike to that lake and luckily I have had enough to eat and to drink with me.

Unfortunately I had not noticed the crowds of people who also took advantage of the great weather until I overtook the first group of 6 or 7 people.

Apart from one quite long steep part up to Forcella Giau it's a fairly easy hike and for this reason there were a lot of families with kids on the trail. I couldn't avoid the people on the first part of the hike but as soon as I reached the Forcella Giau right after the said steep part, I left the trail and walked straight across the mountain pasture where I passed the little lake Laghetto di Baste.

There were a lot of people around the lake but Photoshop helped me to get rid of them. In the first photo of the lake, which I have taken with the phone from further away, you might see some of the people. I never add anything to my images, but I often clone distracting elements out, and people are mostly distracting in my eyes 😉

Some of these huge rocky mountains remind me somehow on images I know from Arizona in the US.

My next private path, which wasn't a path at all, was hiking straight up a steep slope to a ridge and then even steeper down on the other side towards the trail again. It was very exhausting but definitely much more fun than walking amongst the people, and the views were awesome.

The last part of the trail to the lake was crowded with people but this time I couldn't avoid them and so I followed the trail till I reached the Lago Federa which is a quite nice little lake that I certainly will visit again on another day when it's hopefully not surrounded by millions of people 😅 - it was so loud there that I didn't take photos, except the following phone shot, and I left after a short rest of about 10 minutes.

On my way back there were less people and luckily the loud families had also left. So I made a short break at the Forcella Giau from where you can already see the Passo di Giau and the Monte Ragusela where I took some photos on the hill to the south of the path while the sun was slowly setting. It was cold and windy, but the light was beautiful. Some other photographers have also been on this hill off the path, but luckily no one was in my way 😉

After about half an hour I was pretty much alone and so I also made my way back down the steep part of the trail that was quite slippery and I also have become a little bit tired after the 5-hour-hike.

When I was back at the hills on Passo di Giau I wanted to go to my van for a rest at first, but then I saw these amazing clouds and couldn't resist to climb up one of the hills and take some more photos.

A little later it got darker and I went down to my van, had something to eat and after looking through the photos I had a looong and cozy rest till the next morning.

The next morning was quite nice and although all my bones hurt, I climbed up the hill behind the reflection pond, that was occupied by other photographers, and took a few more photos of this awesome area.

About one month later I have been there again: in the morning I had a nice sunny walk at the Adriatic Sea in Grado and in the evening I wanted to shoot the sunset on the snowy Passo di Giau, but I arrived a little too late. I will show you the images about this trip in another post.

Information
Except the images taken with my Xiaomi phone (see the notes below the images), all photos were taken with the Canon EOS R and one of these lenses: Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM, Canon RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM, Canon EF 16-35mm 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF 50mm 1:1.8 L STM, SIGMA 105mm 1:2,8 DG MACRO HSM.

Amazing mountains and photography! Lovely atmosphere and lighting ambience up there! So nice to be able to be among such powerful mountains and nature. Those rocks looked like enormous petrified ancient trees.

Oh! You made a wonderful hiking and had so many pictures to share with us. I also couldn't decide which one that I like most as I love them all.

Ein Traum Johann, deine Fotos sind sowas von gelungen! Ich war vor einigen Jahren auch in den Dolomiten rund um die Drei Zinnen, das ist schon ein beeindruckendes Gebirge. Jedenfalls möchte ich heuer unbedingt wieder einige Wanderungen in den Dolomiten unternehmen. Cortina d´Ambezzo ist hierfür glaube ich ein ganz guter Ausgangsort.

In den Dolomiten kannst du eigentlich fast alles fotografieren und die Fotos werden sicherlich gut sein. "Beeindruckend" ist da fast schon eine Untertreibung wenn ich an die Drei Zinnen oder an die Cadini Gruppe / Cadini di Misurina denke.
Mich schrecken nur die vielen Menschen ab und wenn ich nächstes Mal hinfahre, dann wahrscheinlich nicht zu den bekannteren Plätzen, aber mal sehen 😉 Cortina ist in jedem Fall ein guter Startpunkt, weil von dort hast du in alle Richtungen was.

If you saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind there is the rock formation called Devil’s Tower in Wyoming where alien were said to be landing. Your images sort of remind me of that formation.

I love my van and photo trips are so much better and easier since I have it. I don't have to get up at 2 or 3 in the morning anymore and drive for hours to reach my starting point of a hike. I just drive there the day before and can start the hike after a good sleep 😀

Oh yes, the Dolomites belong to the most beautiful areas I know. The only bad thing about such places is that millions and millions of people think the same and sometimes you feel like in a crowded shopping mall 😏
But when you are not afraid of and fit enough for leaving the official paths and trails, you can have a great time and enjoy the majestic mountains in silence 😀

you're right, even when there are many people around, I enjoy such hikes. It's only annoying when they are too loud.
These peaks are mostly quite steep and most times you need a rope and real climbing skills. That's nothing for me. I like via ferratas, but real mountain or rockface climbing i's something I don't do - too dangerous.
Oh yes, the red clouds were really amazing and well worth a last climb up the hill 😅

Stunning, what a brilliant way to spend a day.
Photography inspires, enjoying a coffee under the aircon allowing myself that magic carpet ride over the Dolomites, what an exceptional treat.
Best gift to bestow is enabling one to be away for a short spell.

Heat only ends here in two months time, wishing for cold front to bring rain, lower the temperature to give us a breather again.
Beaches are the last place to be during heatwave conditions, evenings do not cool down below 24C perhaps an evening stroll if it were safe.

It's snowing here since the early morning, but I can't get out because I'm working a 24-hour shift. It's an easy day though, so I can even work on a new post and watch the world getting white ❄️
I don't think I could live in such heat. When it's too hot here in Summer (over 30C) we talk about getting an AC, but before we can make a decision the temperatures are low again. I often wish it were hotter here in the summer, but reading about your heat I'm actually quite happy with how it is 😉

Hi @johannpiber ,As I look and read I imagine you avoiding people haaaaaa, on October 31st, I suppose some children were in disguise :) I don't think there are too many photos, they are all magnificent, I can see some people in the photo of the lake, well the ones that aren't You can avoid it, the truth is if I were to choose I couldn't make up my mind either, so put all the ones we see is for me one more plus for your excellent work.

have you ever been on a mountain peak and no one else was there but silence and maybe some birds? It's one of the best things I have ever experienced and I always love it when I am lucky to be alone on a mountain 😀
Halloween isn't celebrated here as much as in the US or in other countries, so none of the kids has been disguised, at least I haven't seen any 😉 It was a Monday, so I didn't expect any kids at all, but maybe the 31st of October is a holiday in Italy and many made family trips to the mountains.

There are rock mountain everywhere which I am not sure a bout how cool or it hot at there. You are such an Advanture person who will explore everything on the mountains.
When I took these photos it was a beautiful and warm Autumn day but in the late afternoon it got windy and colder, so I even needed a hat and gloves.
