When was the last time I went for a medical checkup? It was in the middle of last year, and I won’t lie, it’s not something I’m proud of. I know I didn’t go there by choice, I went there because I was sick and tired of falling sick. I think I made a post about it during that period of my life.

It was back when I was still at the peak of my final year runs. Preparing for exams, projects, running assignments and still having to deal with work, bills and all that. I had so much on my plate during that period and it was taking a huge toll on me. I started falling sick. Almost every month I fell ill with malaria. I treated it and it returned the next month. I treated it again and it returned yet another month later.

IMG_20230529_134140~2.jpg

It was by the third time I realized that I couldn’t keep doing that. The last thing I wanted was for my body to develop a tolerance to malaria drugs. So, instead of treating it, I went to the clinic for a full body checkup. It cost me almost 20k, but it was worth it. They told me that it was really malaria, but one of the very stubborn ones, and drugs were not enough to take care of it completely. I had to take injections and drugs before the damn disease left my system.

And once that happened, I felt like a new person. It gave me the strength I needed to scale through my last days as a student. If not, things would have been really terrible for me during my exams and project defense. And it was so thorough that to date, I’ve still not had any case of malaria. So, it was all good! However, as I said at the start of this post, that was the last time I went for a checkup. What about before that? Well, that’s where it begins to get hazy.

Before I returned to school for my HND certificate a few years back, I made a promise to myself to always go for medical checkups at least once or twice a year. I did it shortly before I left Lagos for Owerri to continue my education, hoping that I’ll be able to see my promise through to the end. However, that wasn’t how it panned out at all. Once school resumed and the amount of bills I had to pay began to pile up, I was forced to postpone the checkups, I kept pushing it and pushing it until years passed and I eventually did it last year.

IMG_20231030_153635~2.jpg

Funny enough, it wasn’t that expensive. The lab close to my school seemed to be working with the administration of my school and a full body checkup could be gotten for as low as 10k then. They soon increased it to 12k. And then followed a series of increments that eventually led to it being well over 19k for a full body checkup. And that was just last year. I don’t know how much it would cost now.

And also, that was in the school, now that I’m in Lagos, I’ll have to resume that. I don’t have an excuse as to why I won’t be able to do it this time around. I’ll go to a private clinic or lab because of immediate response and fast delivery, but I also know that it’s going to be expensive as hell. However, it’s something I’m looking forward to trying. That is one habit that I have to get back and that’s what I’ll do, no matter what.

Having periodic medical checks is really good. It gives you a heads-up and lets you know on time if there is something wrong with your body so that you can treat it before it escalates. That’s why it’s so important. We can’t always be prepared for everything, least of all when it comes to our health. However, this way, we get a semblance of control over what we allow to fester in our bodies.

It was a smart move to go for a thorough check up. Many peoole avoid visiting a doctor, as most of the check up ventres are running a scam. They make the person to gobthrough different tests which cost them hefty. People learned about them and are afraid of consulting any health center.

Yeah... people are so scared of this, thinking that doctors will only impose heavy bills on them. It's just sad.

Unfortunately, we often put off exams out of fear, but I'm glad you took care of your health. Malaria is a very serious issue. One question is, what would be the average cost of a "basic" health checkup in dollars?

From your description throughout the text, it seems that exam costs are quite expensive. Even when you mention the increase from 10 to 12, it's somewhat proportionally high.

I hope to see more reports that things continue to work out. As you mentioned, we are not and never will be prepared for everything. Unforeseen events happen, but it's good to always try to find the safest ways to take care of our health.

In dollars, it would be somewhere around $15, with today's exchange rate. It might even be less. For a full body checkup.

Wow, very cheap! Here in my country it costs around $25 for a relatively complete checkup.

The rising cost of healthcare these days is not a child's play oo, but is necessary to prioritize our health. I love the value you place on your health checkups now.

I don't have a choice... it's all so that I don't get sick!

Yes, oh, it’s good to do medical checkups from time to time, even if not for anything but for the sake of staying healthy, because once something goes wrong with the body, it will be very bad to correct.

I don’t usually go to the hospital because I have a sister who is a nurse, but once her prescriptions are not working again, then I don’t have a choice but to go to the hospital, which is not something that I do often.

Omo... being careful is not easy and it's really tasking. But then, what can we do? It's better that than falling ill.

Na so o my brother

Hello there, Bruno. I have read so many entries to this prompt. Like you, the last time many people went for a medical checkup, was not by their choice. One thing led to another and they had to go.

People should really find time to go for regular checkups. It’ll really save you from so many things. Many many things. I say this from experience.

My brother... I used to have it regularly, but school became too hectic and expensive, I couldn't keep up. Now that I'm done with that, I'm planning to resume that life!

If we are healthy, then we are alive. If we are not healthy, we will not be alive. But people living here do not think about this and do their check-up after how many years and then when a disease occurs, it is they don't even get full treatment, especially in developed countries, and that's why we see people leaving the world early.

Yeah.... I guess regular checkups could have a major role to play in the mortality rate of a people.

Yeah you are right.

There is no doubt that health is wealth and we can't take things lightly. I can remember that last year you promised to check up your full body each year and I think it is a good decision.
You said 12k to full body checkup? I want to know the value of it in usdt.

Omo... school didn't allow me keep that promise. This is a different year though, I'll definitely do better!
12k in USDT should be around 7-8 USDT. All the amounts I wrote in my post were in Naira. Our local currency.

7-8 USDT means very cheap. If I could do it in such a price, I would love to checkup my body in each 2 or 3 months.

It's a really good initiative to have a check-up whenever you can, and that's something I'm still due this year. In 2024 I did one at the beginning, I think it was in January or February, but at the moment I'm procrastinating about doing it.

Hehe... what matters is that you've started the habit! I'm sure that before long, you'll make out time and get it done!

I really hope so haha, it's always good to prevent, it's better than cure kkkkk, but anyway, health is a serious thing and I need to focus on it. Cheers.
