My new glasses

One thing I always advise my friends that stay in Nigeria just like me, I tell them that if they can they should try their possible best to stay out of the hospital. Because the medical system in this country is poor, when you go there you find yourself praying even if you don’t believe in God.

One major factor in this is General Hospitals, otherwise known as government hospitals. They are built by the government for the people with the intention of bringing affordable healthcare to them. However, for a lot of them, the service is lackadaisical, staff are not paid well or on time, and even the hospital itself is not funded as it should be.

Sadly though, private hospitals are not better off. One might even say they are worse off because a lot of them start practicing without proper licenses, endangering the lives of the people who patronize them. There are good private hospitals, but they’re ridiculously few compared to poor ones scattered around everywhere.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

When you notice how deplorable the state of most of these hospitals is, then you’ll understand why I said one should try their very best to stay out of the hospital. I’m not advising anyone to self-medicate, that’s harmful and could lead to adverse effects. I’m instead saying that if we indulge in a life of healthy living, and regular checkups, we won’t have to go to the hospital every time!

Personally, for about a year since I returned from Lagos, I’ve only had to pay a visit to the hospital once. And that was not even because I was sick.

Thankfully, I’m not someone that falls ill easily. Although I have to say that I don’t really live an active lifestyle, always going out and putting my body under stress. On the other hand, I actively avoid anything that would bring me stress; I avoid them like a plague. And then, what I mostly do is sit at my desk, typing away at my laptop day after day. When I’m not on my laptop, I’m on my phone or I’m in bed. When I'm not home, I'm either visiting friends or attending lectures. I try my best to exercise regularly and I also go for medical check-ups at the slightest sign that something could be wrong.

The check-ups are not done at the hospital, that would take up the entire day. You’d be shocked to learn that a procedure as simple as a malaria test can take the whole day in a government hospital, and you might not even get the result that day. That’s to tell you just how crowded such places always are. So I do my tests at these labs. Yeah, they cost a lot, but it saves me all that time. Now, with the result of the test, a doctor will advise me on the best way forward. If I’m to go on to the hospital anyway, I’ll be informed.

2dk2RRM2dZ8gKjXsrozapsD83FxL3Xbyyi5LFttAhrXxr16mCe4arfLHA37mQtCuynkak9C9VAxm3nacdB7gLmLiZLuYVhHeNsRgxL6WKJoam3hs2B7ZLAp2jwaLFEwoAbLKzAfpv2DhtyvHbJunTbU58RMbxtkvefNK4qj8EA.png

This has helped me immensely all this while and I’ve been able to keep myself out of the hospital. But alas, I had to get there eventually, right? However, I did say it wasn’t because I fell sick. It was for me to get new eyeglasses. I went to a private hospital because I needed to have it with me by the end of that very day, I didn’t want to be told to go back home and come back. As I was sure I would have been told if I went to a government hospital.

At first, I was scared that it would be an expensive procedure because it was a private hospital, but I was shocked at the price. The new glasses cost me just around the vicinity of 23-25 HBD. And I went there with the mindset that I would be needing 40+ HBD to get the job done.

I was there for not more than four hours and my glasses were ready. Thankfully though, my diagnosis was not complicated nor did it require too much time to fix. I’m short-sighted and function relatively well without the glasses, which I’ve been doing for the past few years. However, as I returned to school, I knew I had to get them or it would affect me. So I did the needful.

This was about two to three months ago, and I’ve not gone to the hospital again ever since. I’m not hoping to ever go, but life has a funny way of happening to everyone. Whether you want to or not, the body will decide when it wants to go to the hospital and you’ll have no choice but to take it.

And as you go there, waiting on your doctor, you follow up with prayers so that the doctor that will come and work on you will have all his thinking faculties intact. So a simple procedure does not end in tears.

In our country some government hospital give the best treatment but remaining government hospital seems very useless. It's true that some government hospital give the best treatment but the service is not good. In case of good service we need to go in private hospitals. Private hospital means extra charge and everyone can't afford it specially the poor people.

I think most of developing country have almost the same situation and I think I measured improvement is need in case of hospital and it's service.

Most government hospitals can't cater to the volume of people who troop in every day. They are way cheaper, and that's why they're always so populated. Private on the other hand, is more expensive and only fewer people can go there.

We all need a total revamp in this sector and get everyone involved to sit up, or things will only get considerably worse from here on.

You see all these our doctors ehn. I just feel they want you to spend money. There are times when you may just be having a minor issue ooh but they will tell you that it is something critical so that you can spend a lot of money.
Why are they like that?

Hehe...😂
I don't really know about them purposely misdiagnosing you. Although I do know that they can misinterpret the symptoms and give treatment for the wrong illness. It's too common and that in itself is very sad. The annoying thing is if the mistake is discovered, you'll still have to pay for the new treatment just as you paid for the last one.

I have a friend who is a sickle cell patient, he had an accident recently and was rushed to a private hospital. Because he wasn't bleeding they assumed he was alright and were giving him Panadols for the pains he was complaining of.

The guy endured the pain for 3 months only to find out it was a broken shoulder bone that had now accumulated rust, and a dislocated arm.

In trying to treat him, they forgot the syringe in his arm for a week. It was at that point his parents sorted for traditional help Instead... This is how chaotic Nigerian hospitals can be.

Jeez... this is how he could have lost the use of his arm like that. The negligence is just too appalling. And sadly, this is not an isolated event. It's too rampant for it to be ignored the way these guys have been ignoring it.

Yes you are right... These are the things government policies are supposed to be taking seriously... But instead those in government will prefer to go outside the country leaving the masses who can't afford it at the mercies of these incompetent doctors... Shame

You see that thing called queue, count me out. I hate it so much, so the thought of meeting that in the government hospitals would make me prefer the private hospitals, even if it requires a bigger fee. Imagine someone waiting on be queue and collapses 😥.

Thank God I don't visit the hospital often

Omo... na so we see am o. Public hospitals and queues is just another form of torture. Because how can someone who is ill still be made to stand in a queue to see a doctor? This is because the government refuses to hire enough staff, and many times even refuse to pay the ones they have on call.
Really scary times indeed.

I swear.
May God not allow us to visit there. Amen!

wait did I read that right. you went to a hospital to get glasses? Don't you go to an optometrist for that.

Lol... They are all in the same hospital. In public hospitals, every field of medicine has their section. That's why many of them are very big, some can even be as big as a small university.
However, in a private hospital, many of them don't have the funds to hire them all, so they outsource. They allow such doctors to set up shop in their hospital (after some agreement I presume) and they refer all issues regarding that field to the specific doctor.

That's why you can go to a regular hospital and be treated for your eyes or even your teeth😬

😇

o.o didnt know that. is that just something in your own country? cause here they actually have their own shop/clinic you can visit and as far as i know

I guess different countries have different methods.
However, there are those here who choose to practice on their own. They get their license and open up shop to cater to their specific field. The thing is that it can be really expensive to maintain and not everyone would be flush enough.
This is why many of them prefer to attach themselves to a hospital.

I see. that makes sense then. I learned something new. Then these hospitals have to be quite big to be able to support all these different sections and not just those patients that are actually needed to be in the hospital for emergency situations or really bad illness like cancer etc x.x

It's mostly public hospitals that are big enough for this. Since they're all paid by the government, then funding shouldn't be an issue. Sadly though, it's not uncommon for them to owe our doctors salaries.

oh ya cuz its paid to the hospital. so u mean like they jus thave to wait to get paid? @_@ i guess thats the downside of not owning ur own space. how long would that be tho to owe months? that would be horrible

The last checkup I went to do took me almost the whole day even when I got there as early as 7 am. I don't pray to keep seeing myself in the hospital because of how poor things are. The good hospitals are rare compared to those poorly and organised one being scattered everywhere. They toil with patient's lives because of their negligence to attend to them on time. The best one could do is to maintain and live a healthy lifestyle and not indulge in activities that may harm the body system thereby visiting the hospital.

I escorted my baby sis to the hospital one time, to get a report on the test she did two weeks prior. This was just a simple malaria test that she had already done. We were there until almost three in the afternoon before she got the report. We then moved on to get doctors prescription before finally getting drugs.
By the time we got home, the day was over!

Very tiring.

It's to lead a stresses and healthy lifestyle and I'm glad it has helped you stay away from the hospital, I have a pretty healthy gene as I hardly get sick too, but too much stress lately has nott made me get my optimum self, I guess I will have to take your advice and try to lead a less stressful lifestyle, hopefully.

Stress is very terrible... It can make you fall sick and the sickness can lead to something else. This is why I try my best to avoid anything at all that will jeopardize my health.

Thank you.

Honestly speaking you said it all @bruno-kema . Visiting the hospital is not a thing I want to do. Its dreadful and so stressful. Emergency is the only thing that can make me visit the hospital. Its a no go area for me.

A lot of us have a bad orientation when it comes to hospitals and it makes many of us avoid it like plague. Just sad.
Thank you for reading.

Interesting so you buy the glasses at the hospital? The hospital system looks like the one i had in brazil. Public system forget it, 80% of private are bad and then you have 20% that are good lol

Hehe... Hospitals here are quite big. They have Optometrists, dentists, and just about every other doctor. Especially the Public ones. So when you have an issue, you simply go to the doctor you need.
It's basically having them all in one place.

The condition of government hospitals in my country is also very much verse, especially in the ruler areas, the hospitals are built but there is no doctor to treat the patients. there are also some clinics, where the people who are treating the patients don't have any proper degree for their profession. But in the Urban, the condition of hospitals are not bad as in the rural areas.

The government hospital is so bad that I don't wish to be there after my last bad experience with them.
