It was the morning of February 8, 2024. I woke up with determination and began to prepare to exercise my right to vote. Today was the day of general elections across Pakistan, where people from every household cast their vote for their preferred candidate. The right to vote is granted to every Pakistani citizen at the age of 18. In the previous elections in 2018, I couldn't register to vote, so I couldn't exercise my right. Therefore, this was my first experience of casting my vote. I was extremely enthusiastic about it.

After having breakfast in the morning, I arrived at the electoral area mentioned on my identity card. I had already checked online through the Election Commission of Pakistan's service where I needed to cast my vote. I wanted to cast my vote as soon as possible, so I reached the polling station right at 8 o'clock when voting began. But what was this? Many others, including myself, had also arrived early to participate in the elections, but the election commission staff was still absent. Therefore, all of us present began to wait for the arrival of the staff.

I had a lot of trust in the democratic system of governance. Therefore, I did not want the opportunity to fulfill my responsibility, which comes only once in five years when my vote determines the representatives who will have the power to legislate in the national and provincial assemblies, and their positive legislation will contribute to the strengthening of Pakistan. This vision began to materialize as voters queued up patiently, waiting to cast their votes. I thought to myself, 'Alright, let's do this.' If I have to endure hardship, so be it. At least for the next five years, I must make a decision that can change the fate of my country.

In the end, the long hours of waiting came to an end, and the electoral process began. The voting process was quite simple. I was informed about the room where my vote was to be cast, so I went there and exercised my right to vote. Despite the long queues, the wait, and my tired state, I was determined to raise my voice of conscience and choose representatives who would legislate in the assembly for the benefit of my country. As I returned home, exhaustion weighed heavy on my eyes.

The voting process was completed by 5 o'clock in the evening. My elder sister was on duty as a government teacher, managing the polling staff. Therefore, I had a good idea of how challenging it is to conduct voting in a progressive country like Pakistan. First of all, you have to note how many ballot boxes you have received. Then, for each vote cast, you have to record the voter's credentials and explain the voting process. Then, at 5 o'clock, all these ballot boxes are collected and gathered in one place, and then each box is opened one by one, and the votes inside are counted to determine how many votes each candidate received. Finally, all the votes from each room are compiled together, and the result of the election booth is prepared on Form 45. On this Form 45, the signatures and thumb impressions of all polling agents and presiding officers are also affixed. Copies of this form are made. Then, the remaining votes or spoiled votes are counted and recorded in Form 46. After that, the equipment provided by the Election Commission is placed in various types of bags according to their instructions. This process is quite complex and confusing. Imagine staying up all night preparing for the election and continuously conducting voting from morning, without eating or drinking, ensuring voting continues smoothly until night. There's also the constant fear of a political group's mob showing up. So, it was a very challenging duty.

As soon as evening fell, I turned my gaze to the TV screen and began to see the results coming in from all corners of the country. I was amazed to see that there were some areas in Pakistan where the complete compiled result had already arrived before 7 o'clock. I wondered whether there were humans or robots counting and verifying votes there? I didn't know. Anyway, the sequence of results coming in continued. My eyes were searching for the results of my electoral constituency. Meanwhile, a notification was issued by the Election Commission stating that all announcements made on TV are unofficial and non-final. The Election Commission will announce the correct result. This announcement seemed perfectly fine at first glance. But then I got to thinking, where were the results being broadcast on TV channels and electronic media coming from? Surely, they were copies of Form 45, which were being sent to the media by polling agents. And based on all these Form 45s, the Election Commission publishes an overall result in the form of Form 47.

The process of results coming in continued until late into the night. Having completed my daily chores, I plunged into the valleys of sleep. Upon waking up early in the morning, I immediately began searching for the results of his constituency, only to be astonished! How could this be possible? How did all this happen? I was bewildered and distressed. It turned out that our constituency's strongest candidate and the strongest party, which was considered worthy of more votes than all other parties in every aspect, were defeated. According to all analysts and survey reports, it was expected that the representatives of this party would win the election with a heavy majority this time. However, all the representatives of this party were defeated, and a former party, which had already been criticized by the public, was empowered. This exchange was recorded in Form 47 at provincial and national levels. The leaders of the losing party were protesting with the Form 45 in hand, and a series of attempts to stop them and violent actions by government agencies were ongoing. Seeing all this, my heart suddenly sank.

I picked up the TV remote and turned it off. In a state of extreme despondency, I was forced to ponder: Is democracy truly prevailing in Pakistan? Is the reason behind this turmoil the democratic system itself, or is it the institutions that fail to adhere to the system's decisions? Do the votes of the people hold no significance, to the extent that they cannot choose their representatives according to their will? Why aren't those protesting with Form 45's being given justice? How long will Pakistan endure this oppressive rule in the name of democracy? When will the fate of this country change? My mind was inundated with countless questions that left me bewildered. Despite my efforts, I couldn't find answers to these questions, and it felt as if I was imprisoned in a dark room. But there is hope... somewhere far away, the flicker of dawn emerging from the darkness is showing me the way, and that is the consciousness of the people. I hope that the time is not far when true Islamic democracy will be established in Pakistan.

The meaning of an Islamic democratic system is that Pakistan's political system will be based on democracy, but that democracy will be underpinned by Islamic principles. Therefore, if democracy contradicts Islamic principles, preference will be given to Islamic principles over democracy. Even if all members of the cabinet collectively desire to make a decision contrary to Islamic principles, Pakistan's Islamic constitution binds them to frame it within the framework of Shariah.

I don't have a complaint against the system, but those in power must be righteous.

I see that you lead a very orderly life, everything is very systematic: you get up early, have breakfast and go enthusiastically to vote. When reading you you make me remember my times as a young man, I had the same disposition that you make me feel when reading you. Nowadays I am no longer like that, rather I resent all politicians, I suppose some will identify with this.

Here in Venezuela we always have to wait for the tables to be activated, since it is typical that something is always needed or there is something new. In the last electoral processes that I attended, a cable for the machine was missing, they did not have the voting notebook or the container with indelible ink was empty. The result was the same: delay in opening the voting center and long lines of people waiting outside...

The process as you describe it is similar to the one we have here too, except that we use machines that count the votes, with touch screens people exercise their right by selecting the candidate of their preference.

But as you can imagine, there is a lot of corruption, because this is one of the most corrupt countries on the entire planet, so many people, like me, choose not to go to vote, because at the end of the day, whether you exercise your right or not, you will be They are going to steal the vote in the same way. I left those nationalist or patriotic thoughts a long time ago, because in reality the state or the government does not care about making my life easier, but rather the opposite.

So my position on this is to mind my business, and let the government mind theirs. And the less I can come close to participating, the better for me. I tell you this with more than 30 electoral processes in which I have actively participated, from within, in political parties of different types and also as a government official in the electoral body. The result and conclusion every time was the same: getting angry and having a bad time, for one reason or another. So since then, I prefer to separate myself from all that, and you know what, I have had a better life.

I suppose they are processes that everyone must live through to realize. And of course the context of each country makes a big difference.

To be honest, I am terrified of living in a country with a large number of religious fanatics and extremists. I love Pakistani food and culture, but I am terrified of its religious aspect. Clear points of view.

But now a question arose in my mind, how old are you? Does it seem to me that you are around 22 or am I wrong? Knowing your age will help me better understand how you think, not to judge you, but rather to be able to understand your reasoning.

I found it extremely curious to read you write about politics, it's strange for me.

First of all, I am grateful to you for taking the time to read my story and providing the feedback on it.

Well. I am currently 23 and 8 months, and the general election of 2024 was my first experience in life when I cast my vote.

You have certainly drawn a very strong and powerful conclusion based on your twelve experiences. Your point is absolutely correct that if we focus on our work, there is benefit for us, and despite false expectations, we do not achieve anything by sacrificing ourselves and working hard. But I understand that we should not stop trying. If we do not resist, the field will remain open for the corrupt. It's just like if a country's army gives up resistance, other countries can easily take control.

The reason behind my stance is that this time, in our Pakistan, the voter turnout was tremendous. People voted with great enthusiasm and zeal. In every election, rigging was done through fake votes, to the extent that where one candidate would get 100 votes, the other would win by putting in more fake votes than that. But this time, people voted so much that even rigging could not succeed. Ultimately, the political elements who used to engage in high-handedness had to change completely. Now, only those forms are there, which can easily be challenged in court because the total votes and individual votes do not match. Yes, but it is a matter of regret that our judicial system is so slow that by the time cases are processed and its answer comes, this government will already be over.

But the best thing is that it has been seen that the public is awake. They are now well aware of who is sincere to this country and nation and who is not, and this awareness is a source of hope for me.

You are very optimistic and that is good. I ask life to give me back those spirits that I had when I was 23 years old, that I wanted to take on the world like you! =)

I am very grateful for your friendship and I appreciate it very much. Believe me, when you are 56 years old you will understand very deeply the importance of what I am telling you, having a young man from another country as a friend helps you understand many things about youth in other countries.

So thank you again for that.

It seems very positive to me that you see hope in the political sphere of your country, and I believe that if a large majority makes a decision, they will definitely achieve a change.

Here in Venezuela, most of us want that, but having such a corrupt state, we cannot achieve it, it is impossible to get out of a regime that controls and dominates everything, including elections.

We have elections on July 28 of this year, and the president has already disqualified all the candidatures of the candidates who oppose him, leaving him alone as the only option, which automatically makes him the winner...imagine the level of corruption that is here. That is why we cannot escape from this situation.

But I see with joy that you maintain your optimism, I have always thought that young people are the force of change, and in those who entrust the future of our countries and our planet into their hands.

oh and it is always a pleasure to comment on your publications, although I admit that coming to do so requires "special" treatment and dedication that your content deserves and that to be honest, you can feel very proud that I only give it to a few hivers with my fingers of one hand =)

I'm delighted that you took the time to read my comment in detail and responded with your thoughts. I'm deeply grateful for that.

The friendship of experienced and visionary individuals like you will never go in vain. As one ages, their experiences grow. The enthusiasm of youth has its place, but until guided by wise and capable leaders, they often remain scattered and unproductive.

Learning about the situation in Venezuela truly astonished me. It's astonishing because in Pakistan, similar practices are employed during elections. The winning presidential candidate's previous cases are closed, and the loser becomes ineligible for the next election. This striking similarity exists in both countries.

I hope the dire situation I witnessed in this country doesn't continue. I don't want future generations to see it like this. Otherwise, they'll also lose hope. If our elders lose hope today, our youth will also destroy themselves. Stand up for the youth in your country. Your guidance will inspire them, and their efforts will surely bear fruit.

Once again, I'm immensely thankful to you. I enjoyed our conversation. Your positive feedback means a lot to me. I look forward to your valuable insights on my blogs.

I also remembered from your post about February 8, because I was also serving as an assistant presiding officer. It was my first experience in life too, so I was very much excitexcited side, but it seems to have disappeared somewhere. You mentioned the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. It is an Islamic country but Islamic laws are not applicable in it. But then I remember the decision of our Creator and Owner when Allah said.

As the nation is, so is the ruler.
In our country, there is no one to raise a voice that's why this is becoming common.
That was also the era when Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) said that
During my caliphate, If any dog is dead thirsty even on the bank of the Neel River I must be held accountable for that.*

We cannot compare these corrupt leaders of Pakistan with Hazrat Umar Farooq(RA), he was our role model. But these Pakistani leaders are nothing but an example of shame.

"As the nation is, so is the ruler"... It is true that if people stop corruption, maybe the leaders will also think of not doing it, but we all are so used to committing small sins that sometimes we don't even consider that we are doing sin.

Last election left all of us unsatisfied, just pray from Allah Tala for our futures, maybe Allah will help us to get out of this dark hole of politics.

After reading your post, I am taken back to February last year when we had our presidential election here in Nigeria. Exactly what you narrated was what I experienced. The only difference is the the country you mentioned in your post.
I don't want to sound too spiritual, but I know that God's place for us remains the best. He sees all that we go through everyday, so he knows best.
No matter who rules a lqnd, the lard still has the final say.

Thanks jessicaossom for leaving a lovely comment.
This narrative is true of all countries that are still developing...Pakistan and Nigeria stand in the same place, the parties with more power win by majority whether the people vote for them or not.
More power means more chances to win, lol.

True, God knows everything and He will surely give us the fruits of what we are going through to live in our countries

In these elections, I had volunteered as the polling agent, and that too of the party that was being under threats. And it was not just me who was there my mother was there too, but she was as the agent of the some minor party. It was kinda strategy that if something happens to us then there ought to be someone there. And same was the case for my father.
We did all this not because we have political background or something. We just wanted to ensure that we do anything that was in our hands.
Everyone knew that what's gonna happen in the end, but the victory was in the unveiling of hidden agendas which would have never revealed otherwise.

I am glad your whole family has safely completed their duties. That's a positive approach. Yes, we are aware of those, but it's good that more and more people have started pointing fingers at those figures. Previously, that wasn't the case. Did you know that, in the name of patrolling, officials collect too much information to blackmail people later?

That wasn't a problem for us at that time, because we had already faced police at home🤧. It was very unique experience for me. And yeah there were some vehicles patroling whose number plates were masked with mud.

Even I have seen police in my life. I think in today's era, the police bothering you is a common thing in Pakistan.

I wanted to give both my votes to Awami national party but then we were told by relatives to give the main vote to "Jumat Islami". The voting process for me was very easy as there were not many people voting.

Both of your votes lol... you only have one vote.
Whichever party you choose is up to you. You can vote for whoever you want, at least you are not like those people who stay in their homes and think that their votes will not change anything.

Both of your votes lol... you only have one vote.

One for national assembly seat and one for provisional assembly seat I had two votes my friend, for you it was only 1 vote?

I realized my mistake (when I was outside today) and was expecting your comment at any moment.

Actually, I was thinking from the perspective that some people call their family's votes their own, as they may influence family members to vote for their preferred candidates.

Yeah one of my votes was a family vote.

A wonderful innovation with a wonderful atmosphere is a new goal. Walking and physical exercise in such nature is very good for health. May God always bless you with all abilities. I welcome my dear friend from Bangladesh.
