It is no news again that the era we are now is that of the internet in which the social media plays a huge part of it. This era is so outstanding that most if not all human activities, endeavors and dealings in one way or the other revolve round the information and communication technology. As there are many positives that came with this advent, there are also the downside of it especially when not used or handled properly. Social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, X, Instagram etc are online platforms which helps to foster social interactions both far and near to the degree one chooses.
Aside social interactions, the social media platforms are also leveraged on for transactions, business, facilitating online meetings and so on, hence, can have effect on one's job either to the positive or negative. Due to poor social media mismanagement, some people have lost their jobs while some business have gone down because of this same mismanagement. Therefore, i believe there should be caution and clearly defined term of usage of social media by each employee and also employer if labour. I believe every matured adults under the law of the land should take responsibility for their use of social media and hence, entitled to privacy.
I don't support employees submitting their social media handles to their employers, however, they should be made to be aware of the possible effects and consequences of their social media mismanagement and hence, the need for caution most especially those working in sensitive workplaces e.g. security agents, bankers etc. A proverb says: "Words are like egg which when broken can't be recovered" and the common slogan that: "Social media doesn't forgive". For example, i once heard of a story of a man who applied for a certain job of his desire, but however at one time or the other posted on one of his socia media platforms post whose content are against the policies of this company which on the long run forfeited his chance of been employed.
I'm of the opinion that asking employees to submit their social media handles to their employers is an invasion on their privacy as some employees has legitimate online engagements e.g. business, transactions that is exclusive to them and doesn't affect their delivery at their paid employments. Personally, even if it is my dream job, i can never be willing to submit such at any point of time. I believe the best approach is that organisations should enlighten their workforce about how their social media management is key to their employment status with the organization and any negative breach might be dangerous. E.g. The need to be apolitical for some organisations or non disclosure agreement (NDA) in some.
In all, a good sign of maturity is to know boundaries and honour privacy especially employees aswell as their employers. Not all information or contents should be in the public space and not everything is what commenting or posting on. It takes the wise to strike a balance as required or needed. I support your perspective, I believe employees have the right to separate their lifestyle from work related activities. Some jobs definitely demands being cautious of words on social media which every employee must be aware of but employers having access to employees social media handles gives them the right to control the kind of activities that can be engaged in by the employees in the name of protecting organisation interest.
