Discrimination practices in Africa; it's possible to put an end to this!

in Hive Learners2 years ago (edited)

The unequal treatment between a male and a female in our world today has become so rampant, taking my country, Nigeria, as a case study. Gender discrimination has existed even before I was born and is still very much in practice in different ways. With the help of social media, some notable women have taken it upon themselves to preach about gender equality, but the ongoing discrimination is still very much in practice to this day.

For instance, in my culture, a female is not entitled to family land benefits. Only males have the right to share in the landed property for the family. Even when a meeting concerning land is being held, a female is not expected to come close to the gathering, let alone take part. In my biological family, all my brothers have gotten their land inheritance, leaving us ladies empty-handed. They believe that ladies will get married and leave the family house to their husband's house, thus the discrimination. In education as well, there was a time when our fathers hardly sent females to school because of the same reason, my mum faced this issue and it affected her till date. The discrimination starts at a younger age, which leaves a negative impact on the lives of children.

When you talk of taking some roles in some establishment, they still apply discrimination, either to affect a male or female. In the church or mosque, the practice happens on a daily basis. In some cases, females are considered first, leaving the male behind because people believe that men have the capacity to withstand suffering. All these are forms of discrimination that some people neglect.

In my part of the world, when a man commits infidelity, it's regarded as a normal act; after all, he is a man, but if it was a woman that did the same, the woman would be humiliated and have her property thrown outside her matrimonial home, and that would be the end of the marriage. Why can't everyone be treated equally? Why are men paid more in some establishments than women, even when they have the same role? Because men are assumed to have more strength? The truth is that this thing called discrimination affects everyone in one way or another.

My experience with discrimination:

During my NYSC program (a compulsory program by all Nigerian youth to serve their country for one year in any establishment being posted to), I was rejected by my own gender in the Lagos State Dental Center. A woman was the head of the dental department then and should be the one to accept me and write to NYSC officially. She said that she can't accept me because I am a woman, you could imagine. According to her, She wouldn't want to hear, "I am going for antenatal care; my child is due for immunization; my husband is doing this or that". She needs only men who wouldn't have such distractions. Just because I am a woman, I got rejected in my supposed workplace just like that. At last, I searched for another establishment that accepted me for who I am and gave me a request letter to submit to NYSC based on that. That is how I later served my country and moved on with the next step in my life.

The world is evolving, and it will be nice if this practice is put to an end. If I have the opportunity, I will ensure that any person or firm found to be discriminating will be brought before judgments . It's high time society saw all genders as equal before each other and treated everyone equally without making women or men feel less of themselves.

In conclusion, despite our differences in color, size, language, and gender, discrimination of any sort should be discouraged. Let love lead!

Nigeria is a highly patriarchal society where rules and laws are made to favor the men, we still have a long way to go before things change for the good. Those excuses the head of the dental department gave are really weak, just because other women gave various reasons to be excused from work doesn't mean all women are going to be that way too, and she can't tell me that men don't get distracted too

Awwwwww 🥰🥰🥰
I love the fact that you accepted the truth here... rules and laws are made to favour men the most which is pure discrimination
And to my experience, the woman couldn't give me the opportunity to proof her wrong or right, she just concluded and discriminated immediately...

It's well oo
Thanks for coming through bro

There's another anglr of discrimination I'm seeing, I guess we only see as far as we can, so we judge based on what we see, because personally I felt men are the ones who are more affected by discrimination but obviously from your experience it shows both gender does. I hope we come together as a people to curb this act

Noooo
Not only men grandpa, you should know better

However, the yorubas shares equal land inheritance to all genders but Igbos discriminate us on that...the part that affects men more happens on a daily basis where people protect women more and allow men to suffer as if they aren't human beings as well

Exactly let love lead, how I wish they will listen to our write-ups and change things for better...the whole thing is annoying seriously, how women are denied of their own father properties just because they are females, I wish this tradition will be change. Nice blog! hugs👍

Yea, it's a bad tradition and an obvious discrimination...I am looking forward to that time it can change for good

Would there really be an end to an issue that started way way back even before we were born?

I really doubt but then there's always room for trials.

The basic and most uncomfortable problem I have regarding this gender discrimination is that it's actually pioneered recently by people who are very learned so how else, which approach should we really employ in getting ourselves out of this mess when it already seems like Education has failed

Hmmmmm
But that's the truth
Even the learned are following the footsteps of our forefathers in discriminating.. well, it will be a tough issue to handle while trying to put an end to it

No lies about that

I have read your article completely and it is truly engaging. The issue of discrimination against the female gender is as complex as life itself. Sometimes it is very puzzling to grapple with. However I also believe that women have not helped themselves much. Your experience of being rejected by a woman in your first posting for youth service in Lagos state says it all.

While I support the abolition of discrimination against women on issues relating to job and school, I may not be quick to insist on women having land inheritance and all that. I have my reasons.

Hahaha 😂, you are a man now, you will not support women to inherit land but the yorubas shares equal inheritance with all genders...is that not something the Igbos should learn as well? Are all genders not human being? Discrimination of any type isn't fair if you ask me but I know many people will see it differently

By the way,I love your comment/contribution here... thanks so much Sir 😂

Not accepting women for certain jobs/positions is very sad! Hopefully, you got your way into your career in another institution.

It's common in Nigeria and we are already getting used to it.accepting our fate
It's bad here

Your post made me remember my former work place. Our director will not employ a woman giving such reasons you stated in your post. The only reason for employing a woman is if she's very intelligent I mean outstanding than all the men applying and he can see that she is an asset. What a world!
May God help us.

People can discriminate you without knowing, for them it is just what they feel is the right to do.

 2 years ago (edited)

Yea.. people do what they feel it's right to them without minding if it affects one or not
Thanks for coming through

I still have issues with the double standards. Men get property while women don't. Stupid. Men can cheat but women can't. Stupid. Same job but different pay? Stupid.

Now I understand why some discrimination is required. I mean do you really want to share a changing room with the men? Or perhaps be in a boxing match with a man? My guess is NO. Those are bad places for equality.

However, treating each person with dignity and the same rights. I'm all for that. Let's hope things get better there sooner than later.

It's indeed stupid practices but are they even seeing anything wrong with that? It's been like this for ages and I doubt if something can be done about it any time soon 🤔
