Over the years, I've had diverse experiences using both the government-owned services and the privately owned services, and I can tell that both have their merits and downsides. Personally, when it comes to anything health-related, I use the government services mostly, except on rare occasions when I need an urgent diagnosis or treatment.
I have done 3 surgeries while giving birth, and all have been through the government services, not because I cannot afford the cost of the private hospitals around me but simply because I need to be where I will be handled by specialized doctors. I don't know about other states, but here in Lagos State, Nigeria, where I reside, I have used different government-owned hospitals, and they are all well equipped with specialists to attend to patients as the need arises. It's never the case of one particular doctor being the Anastasia doctor; he is also the pediatrician, he is the gynecologist, just name it. This thing is common in the private hospitals, and that's why I hardly patronize privates when it's about sensitive health treatment.
The government hospitals have different sectors working together to ensure a whole treatment. For example, I gave birth the other time and a complication arose, the pediatrician and the ENT specialists were called urgently to attend to my child and the situation was handled immediately. Some private hospitals may not have the services of those bodies available, and you would be referred, and of course, delay is dangerous when it's about emergencies. Some private hospitals have other specialists on appointments, meaning that you can't see a particular specialist whenever you need the service until the day the doctor will be on duty within the week. I have been transferred from private to government hospitals several times because of the same issues. Good enough, I have been meeting private doctors who are sincere enough to disclose that they can't handle my case all alone in their hospital, but rather I should make use of the government hospital where many doctors will be available to brainstorm and give me the best service.
I really have a lot to say about government services when it comes to the health sector because even with my kids, I have had a lot of experiences using both services. At this point, I am sure you may have been convinced of why government services are my preference in the health sector. However, I wouldn't overlook their downsides which includes long queues before seeing the doctor, the general wards are not always neat enough unless you pay to stay in the private ward and some other downsides.
In education, hmmm, I am only choosing the private sector due to overcrowded classroom, the nonchalant attitude of most tutors in the public schools, and the persistent strike in public schools especially in my country. But sincerely, if you are looking for schools with qualified teachers, you see them in the public schools. These days, governments are really upgrading, building smart schools in some states, adding modern facilities, but still, I think the private schools are well-structured with more dedicated teachers because they are more monitored, unlike what we see teachers do in public schools. Putting my kids in private school comes with intentionality because most private schools around here don't hire qualified teachers because they don't want to pay them well. So I take my time to consider a lot of factors before choosing a private school, although it comes with high-cost services.
If money isn't a problem, I wouldn't even dream of using the government services in terms of power because it's only disappointment I can get. It's preferable for me to equip my home and office with solar and escape all the headaches from the government services when it's about power.
In conclusion, picking a preference between government and private services depends on the sector. There are times when the government services are just a lifesaver for me, whereas in some cases, the private service is my go-to. Let's just say that both complement each other depending on the individual needs at the point in time.

Well, maybe LUTH might be a better government hospital, but the doctors (hematologist) I met at LASUTH were terrible. Obviously I had a lot going on with me, and they were misdiagnosing and writing the wrong meds for me. It wasn't until I met a specialized hematologist in a private hospital, that I knew that there were things wrong with me that I didn't even know.
Wow...your experience isn't a good one Joe, so sorry about it. sometimes, some specialists on duty can be very careless..it happens even in the private hospitals.. because of course human can be human. I wouldn't overlook the fact that some good doctors in the public sector mismanage patients atimes... however, there's something I don't fail to do whenever I am set for a treatment in the hospital and that's to ask God to be the lead because these guys irrespective of where you are receiving the treatment can mess up at any time
That's true, it depends mainly on the state, I my area the government services is a no no when it comes to health related issues. My husband's cousin don't have three of his toes today because of the carelessness from the general hospital here. Probably the ones in your state is well equipped because they feel they make more from people there than here.
Many to talk about, but am glad you have good services from the government body in the area of health in your area
Sure...I think it depends on the state..most Lagos government hospitals are trying beyond my expectations.
Las las, it boils down to everyone using the services suitable for their needs
For health sector, I support government owned services but one discouraging downside as well concerns the rudeness of some of the nurses and non-medical staff. It is just annoying.
For school, I support private owned o.
Then for power supply, I support myself. I wish I could afford every Mena's of generating power supply for myself and my own usage without depending on the government.
So annoyed
Yes, some of them can be rude at the hospital, no doubt and it's annoying but some days, I meet nice set of people and enjoy their services
Hehe..we have both similar preferences
Thanks for engaging 🥰
You're welcome ma
One has to consider lots of factors with both private and government services to go for the best. I would also say when it comes to some certain treatment, government sector wins it over. But you know, there are merits and demerits.
Of course...the merits and demerits cannot be overlooked
My dear that is it for Nigeria. When it comes to hospital, go to the government sector, but when it comes to education, if you choose them OYO for you. Hahahaha 🤣. But some government hospitals are not good at all. Some of their nurses don't really know how to talk to people.
Thanks for sharing
Lol.. sometimes I receive a very good service from the government sector, I think it depends on the people on duty
Yes, I agreed, on the health and that's because we have specialist that can handle complications
Sure...they are always available over there and u enjoy the service more when you meet dedicated ones on duty
Yes ooo
Thanks for your sincerity. Truly both private and government have their advantages and disadvantages. In nutshell they are all good depending on one's experience.
It also depends on where you received the services
Exactly ma'am.
The health sector is a very good reason to either want to consider a private sector or a government sector.
But yes, if you have the money, the private sector is mostly the best because there is no break or any reason to not do something at any point in except money.
If money is not really a barrier...we know what we really want for sure 😃
That’s just it. 🤓
Hello there, mama. Like you, I prefer public hospitals. I have experienced both and one thing I realized is that private hospitals lack some of these important machines, compared to public hospitals that are well equipped.
You see some of the best hospitals in Nigeria are actually owned by the government like the UCH here in Ibadan. However they sometimes don't have the right facilities compared to the private hospitals. My brother once studied at babock and during the time he had a serious illness and was admitted into their teaching hospital. That hospital had everything possible as well as qualified doctors needed to treat any sick patient. The environment, the beds and everything there were all making sense. This is one of the things most government hospitals lack. As for the school part, I would choose the private sectors anytime and anyday especially if money isn't an issue.
It's good to have options. When one messes up, you switch to the other. Private health sector is wack, you switch to government. Public school is not all that good, you move to private. In all cases, you think bard and figure out which one works best for you. That's how it should be.
