We know that the displacement of marine species has taken different directions in recent years, many animals have decided to go beyond their habitats in search of food, shelter, well-being and other issues. And although this is not the case, it is always shocking for humans to know that they may be living with marine species that can harm us, such as the Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis).🌊

It is good to be cautious, but this should NEVER be a reason to harm species and their habitats, they are animals and their intention is not to harm us. In this post we will learn a little more about this species and its biology...

The Portuguese man o' war is often mistaken for a jellyfish, but it is actually an entire colony! It is a monotypic colonial species of siphonophore hydrozoan of the Physaliidae family. Its distribution is practically all warm or tropical and subtropical seas, each colony of these animals swims alone and is well known for its painful sting throughout the world (Instituto Oceanográfico de Murcia, 2010).👆

Portuguese man o'war alert⚠️

This alert has been issued on one of the most famous islands in Mexico: the island of Cozumel. A truly magical place with turquoise blue beaches like the sky, in fact, there is a place called "El cielo" due to the blue of its waters and the number of starfish there. The Portuguese man o'war was identified on the beaches "Punta Langosta" and "Playacar".👀

One of the curious facts is that all this began to be known through photos on social networks of people who went to the beaches. Some people alerted the Cozumel community through Facebook, another curious fact is that the people who saw it were aware of this animal and the care we should take in front of them👆

What to do if you see a Portuguese man-of-war on the beaches of Cozumel?

According to information from the island's Civil Protection, the first thing to do is to approach a lifeguard or call 9-1-1. In addition, follow these tips:

👉Do not swim or play in the water if you detect the presence of this species.
👉Never touch a Portuguese man-of-war, either in the sea or on the beach, they are toxic even when dead.
👉If you walk on the sand in their presence, protect yourself with sandals or shoes.

All these measures must be taken into account anywhere in the world, let's remember that the sea is the habitat of thousands of species, even those that could cause us harm, let's learn to coexist.🌊
