For this Wednesday Walk Challenge hosted by @tattoodjay, I'm taking you on a little stroll around Montreal during last Sunday's snowstorm. I wanted to post this Wednesday, but I took advantage of the fresh snow to go skiing yesterday. And on the way back, fatigue prevented me from finishing writing this post. My bed was calling me 😀 I hope I'm not too late for the challenge, I didn't want to wait another week to share this with you.
Pour ce Wednesday Walk Challenge organisé par @tattoodjay, je vous propose une petite balade à Montréal pendant la tempête de neige de dimanche dernier. Je voulais poster ce mercredi mais j'ai profité de cette belle neige fraiche pour aller skier un peu. Et au retour, la fatigue m'a empêché de terminer d'écrire ce post. 😀 J'espère que je ne suis pas trop tard pour le challenge, je ne voulais pas attendre une semaine de plus pour partager cela avec vous.
After the first storm last Thursday, another snowstorm hit Montreal on Sunday. Over 75 cm (28") of snow on the streets in just a few days. An event hasn't happened in several years, I heard 1971 😮...
Après la première tempête de jeudi dernier, une autre bordée de neige s'est abattue sur Montréal le dimanche. Plus de 75 cm de neige en quelques jours dans les rues, c'est un événement qui n'est pas arrivé depuis plusieurs années, j'ai entendu 1971 😮...
I had no intention of going out late Sunday afternoon. But I went to help a friend clear the snow off his car. What's more, he lives not far from a very good bakery De Froment et de Sève. This motivated me to pick up some bread and croissants for the next morning. As they say, after effort comes comfort.
Je n'avais pas l'intention de sortir ce dimanche en fin d'après-midi. Mais je suis allé aider un ami à déneiger sa voiture. De plus, il habite pas très loin d'une très bonne boulangerie De Froment et de Sève. Cela m'a motivé pour récupérer par la même occasion du pain et des croissants pour le lendemain matin. Comme on dit, après l'effort, le réconfort.

When I left home, there was already a good 30 cm (12") of fresh snow on top of the snow that had fallen a few days before. Sidewalks were limited to a small path. With the strong winds blowing, the light snow on the roofs was flying on the eyes. Not easy to walk...
En sortant de chez moi, il y avait déjà bien 30 cm de neige fraiche en plus de la neige tombée quelques jours avant. Les trottoirs se limitaient à un petit sentier. Avec les vents forts qui soufflaient, la neige lègère sur les toits volaient. Pas évident de marcher...
You can see all the snow that's fallen on this truck. It would take a bit more to cover the tags 😀. I often see this truck around the neighborhood, owned by construction workers. They've been leaving it as is for some time now. It also lacked a few inches of snow to cover those bikes 🔽.
On peut voir toute la neige tombée sur ce camion. Il en faudrait un peu plus pour couvrir les tags 😀. Je vois souvent ce camion dans le quartier, appartenant à des travailleurs de la construction. Ils le laissent tel que depuis quelque temps. Il manquait aussi quelques centimètres de neige pour couvrir ces vélos.
On Saint-Hubert street, cars were playing hide-and-seek. Some had almost completely disappeared under the snow. I felt sorry for the owners who had to clear all that away. On the way, I passed a few snowploughs trying to keep the main streets open. Big challenge...
Sur la rue Saint-Hubert, les voitures s'amusaient à jouer à cache-cache. Certaines avaient presque réussi à complétement disparaitre sous la neige. Je plains les propriétaires pour dégager tout cela. Sur le chemin, j'ai croisé quelques chasse-neiges qui essayaient de maintenir les rues principales ouvertes. Gros challenge...
I also came across a few courageous people, including a runner (you can see him in the photo above 🔼 with the green coat), a guy doing cross-country skiing and even a cyclist who got a round of applause from people who had come out of the tavern to smoke a cigarette. Two opposing states of mind to face this snowstorm: face it or seek refuge in the warmth. I'll be more of the second 😀.
J'ai croisé aussi quelques personnes courageuses dont un coureur (on peut le voir la photo au dessus 🔼 avec le manteau vert), un gars faisant du ski de fond et même un cycliste qui s'est fait applaudir par les gens qui étaient sortis de la taverne fumer une cigarette. Deux états d'esprit opposés pour affronter cette tempète de neige : soit l'affronter ou soit se réfugier au chaud. Je serai plus de la seconde option 😀.

After helping my friend, he'd already done most of the work. It was more I stopped to say hello while holding a shovel 😀. I set off on the second mission of my walk, to pick up some bread and especially some very good croissants at De Froment et de Sève. I usually walk through this alley 🔼, but this time I went through the normal street to arrive right in front of this mural by Jest. Even in the middle of a storm, StreetArt looks good.
Après avoir aidé mon ami, il avait fait déjà la plupart du travail. Je suis plus passé pour dire bonjour en tenant une pelle 😀. Je suis parti vers la deuxième mission de ma balade, récupérer du pain et surtout de très bons croissants à De Froment et de Sève. Généralement, je marche dans cette ruelle 🔼, mais cette fois je suis passé par la rue normale pour arriver juste devant cette murale de Jest. Même en pleine tempête le StreetArt se fait remarquer.
Just before arriving at the bakery, I passed another big snowplough in the middle of work. I arrived just before closing time to buy my bread and the last 3 croissants of the day. Sometimes you have to take a risk, brave a storm to get the most succulent pure-butter croissants. I recommend this bakery if you're in the area.
Juste avant d'arriver à la boulangerie, j'ai encore croisé un gros chasse neige en plein travail. Je suis arrivé juste avant la fermeture pour acheter mon pain et les 3 derniers croissants de la journée. Parfois il faut savoir prendre des risques, braver une tempête pour avoir des croissants pur-beurre succulents. Je vous conseille cette boulangerie si vous êtes dans le coin.
Then it was back home, looking at the beautiful houses on rue Saint-Hubert. I loved the contrast between the cold colors of the snowstorm and the lights inside the houses. I hope you enjoyed this walk in the cold for the #WednesdayWalk (well the ThursdayWalk 😀). Enjoy the walk...
Puis ce fut le retour à la maison, en regardant les belles maisons de la rue Saint-Hubert. J'ai bien aimé le contraste des couleurs froides de la tempête de neige avec les lumières à l'intérieur des habitations. Wow, I didn't realize Montreal got 28 inches. We are in Rouses Point and were supposed to get 18, but ended up only getting a foot. We went to Montreal yesterday and the sidewalks were still tough to get through for my daughter. Haha love that picture of the guy on skis.
In the 15 years I've lived in Montreal, this is the first time I've seen so much snow... And there's still a lot of snow, I think only 1/3 of the streets have been cleared.

It's certainly been an interesting winter 😅 Yea I assumed you got about the same as us and it had been cleared, so I wasn't expecting that! The drive back down 15 was also challenging with the wind drifts - I saw 2 cars that had gone off the road.
Cool to see you out there in it 🙂 thats a lot of snow but a nice croissant can be worth it haha I love a good bakery
