Wednesday Walk: a night walk through the port of Castro Urdiales

The North coast of Spain not only offers impressive panoramic views of cliffs that are continuously made up by that chisel - as the wise Hindu poet Rabindranath Tagore said - which is water, with its song and its song.

In this case, the water and therefore the chisel that has been shaping these coasts over millennia, is none other than that of that sea, beautiful but brave where it exists, which is the Cantabrian Sea.

But it is not a walk along the cliffs to which I want to invite you, but to another, shorter but not less splendid in the end, such as walking at night through the port of one of the most beautiful cities of the entire Cantabrian coast: Castro Urdiales.

P1180356_copia.jpg

Castro Urdiales, was already ancient when the powerful legions of Rome embarked on that great epic, which historians such as Schulten, called the Cantabrian wars, although the Roman name of Flaviobriga still persists in the memory of some people, who never lost their character and his love of freedom.

During the Middle Ages, this was one of the most important ports and at the same time, most frequented by the hundreds, if not thousands of pilgrims who continually arrived, following their devoted walk towards Santiago de Compostela.

P1180368_copia.jpg

Some followed the so-called Camino de la Costa, going up to Asturias and entering Galicia either through Lugo or La Coruña, although others frequented the so-called Palentina Mountain and the Burgos Merindades on their adventure.

P1180369_copia.jpg

The walk also has the great incentive of having a small castle, which is also a lighthouse, where it is assumed that the Knights Templar guarded these coasts and where a good part of their powerful fleet also arrived.

Next to the lighthouse, one of the most impressive Gothic elements in all of Cantabria: its church of Santa María, which by the way, is currently undergoing restoration and where, so to speak, the climb to the old quarter begins, with narrow streets, all they are dedicated to virginal or apostolic figures, such as Santa María, San Juan or San Martín.

In front of the port, is one of the most spectacular promenades in all of Cantabria, with numerous catering establishments and displaying, in its buildings, the whimsical forms of modernist art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which spread so much throughout the main Spanish cities.

P1180765_copia.jpg

In short, a short walk, which I invite you to appreciate in the photographs and which I hope will leave you with a good memory of a city, Castro Urdiales, not only beautiful but always affectionate with the traveler.

Thank-you very much

May nit be cliffs but I agree it is such a beautiful area

Wwt

It is a truly splendid area and although it is not appreciated in the photos, it is also surrounded by spectacular cliffs, where the roar of the waves gave rise to many mythological legends, populating that sea with fantastic beings. Kind regards

Sounds like such an interesting place as well as beautiful

Oh that looks like such a stunning place and you captured some brilliant photos of it too!

I am sooo jealous for I am supposed to be unpacking my bags after arriving in Alicante to celebrate my birthday with a few friends over there right now- except the pandemic hit and here I am still in Australia...
Next year hopefully...

It is a place worth visiting and for that reason, if you have the chance, I recommend it, with the assurance that you will not be disappointed. Surely one day we will see you here and even who knows, maybe we can share some pintxos and a good wine.

Absolutely!

I have a friend from here that is flying out tonight to move to Valencia, so I will not only have my 2 IRL friends there, but all of my hive family too and I can't wait!

I don't know what Pintxos is, but I am IN! 😃

This is a pintxo:

Is that a Crayfish, Lobster or something else? It looks like a prawn on the left of the plate...I imagine that Spain has great fresh seafood that we do over here too.

It is cod loin and a prawn, drizzled with a special sauce, which here is called pilpil.

Well it looked delicious, but I'll have to stick to the famous Mediterranean vegetable dishes....

Is this a canal? A lovely place for walking. Those boats must belong to fishermen.

It is a port and although most are fishermen's boats, there is also the Nautical Club, with its sports boats.

Such a great place! the buildings looks so amazing and grand. But I wonder how those owner of the boats board those which are far from the port

They use small boats and even the port's own services.

Thst's lovely to know. Thank you. Goof day.
