Before Summer ends here in Japan, (aw actually I think it's already Autumn here now), let me share my journey to one of the beaches in Shizuoka.
Last August, I took a personal leave at work in the afternoon so I could go to Atami Sun Beach. I went to Atami because I wanted to see the Atami Grand Fireworks Festival and I wanted to be early so I could go around the place.
It was my first time going to Atami. Before I was just passing by this place and witnessing the sea view from the windows of the bullet train so I was so excited.
From JR Shinjuku Station, I took the train to Atami for almost 1.5 hours. It's not that bad if you think about it, since Atami is in Shizuoka. I could take the bullet train but I didn't. Bullet trains are expensive and I got myself a discounted pass called Seishun 18 Kippu.
The Seishun 18 Kippu will allow me to ride the JR trains (rapid or local) all day within its validity period. I'm allowed to use it 5 times on different days or share it with 5 friends for 1 day. My friends and I have already used this pass when we went to Onjuku Beach in Chiba last July. To know more about this discounted pass, you can check this link.
Luckily, my train wasn't so crowded so I could sit comfortably and away from people.
When I arrived at Atami Station, I was surrounded with lush greens and I was in a dilemma for a bit if I was in the right place. I was expecting to see the ocean but where?
The clouds in the sky also made me worried. I hoped it wouldn't rain.
Outside the train station, it was a bit crowded and I was pretty sure these people would go to the beach area to witness the fireworks.
The surroundings of the train station was full of establishments and I wasn't really expecting much because this area is not as urbanized as Tokyo. So I was a bit surprised to see this place lively.
If ever the map on your phone won't work, there's a map outside the station. Upon checking, I still need to walk a few more to get to the beach. The map board is also showing the tourist destinations of Atami. Next time, I'll be back to check them out.
Everybody seems to be going in the same direction so I was just following them.
I passed by a covered shotengai but many shops were closed. Probably because of the effects of COVID. I love shotengais, there were a lot of them in Osaka and I used to go to different shotengais when I was still living there.
A shōtengai (商店街) is a style of Japanese commercial district, typically in the form of a local market street that is closed to car traffic.

There are so many hotels and ryokans that I passed on the way to the beach. Maybe next time, I'll try to stay in one of the accommodations around this place.
In small towns like this, I guess it's okay to cross the road not in the pedestrian lane? 😅
I honestly felt like I was lost. I wasn't sure if this was the way because it seems like a narrow road with nothing to see. But I trust my map and my instincts. 😅
It seems like this staircase was a shortcut to get to the beach but it's really so long and high. I would be dead tired if I take the same stairs going back to the station.
There was another set of stairs but now I felt relieved seeing the beach. That means, I almost reached at my destination.
I passed by the skywalk, some kind of overpass for pedestrians and I was surprised to see this. I am not familiar with other religions' practices but it seems to be a shrine.
For a moment, I was thinking if I should just go and watch the fireworks festival in the 2nd floor of the convenience store, Lawson but I erased the thought.
I took some more photos while I was still in the overpass before I went to the beach area.
Walking around the concrete area of the beach, you could see some art. Since they are labels on them, I think they were from a competition. Some were significant events on the years I guess.
In this post, I won't be talking about what happened to me after in Atami Sun Beach and how the Grand Fireworks Festival went. You can read about that in my previous post.
I'll just share this one photo of the docks. No worries, this photo wasn't shared in my previous post.
After the fireworks show, it was drizzling so I was like a Wet Wittyzell walking to the station. Yep, no umbrella for me and figured no need to buy one.
Outside the train station, I noticed this old display of a train and it was also wet from the rain. Guess I wasn't the only one. LOL
It was a rainy Atami when I went home but it was all worth coming. I'll be sure to come back in the future to tell you about the beauty of this place.

Thanks for reading!
See you around! じゃあ、またね!
All photos are taken using my phone unless stated otherwise.
The equinox always seems to be a divider. Traditionally we've been in autumn for a while now, but the equinox is when you start to feel it. Afterwards the temperature starts to drop. Seeing the higanbana appear is also a sign autumn is truly here.
Anyway, great photos! I had my honeymoon in Atami many many years ago. Beautiful city. It used to be considered one of the best places for vacations. That was long before I took a honeymoon there, which also was a while ago now. Those ryokan are great, many with onsen areas somewhere on their property. Lots of stairs and climbing in the city... but that just makes for good exercise, ne? Walking along the waterfront, did you see the statue of the fellow kicking the girl? (It's a scene from a famous book) That used to be a landmark used to meet people.
!PIMP
It's starting to get colder now so Autumn is really here, but I'm still sweating when I go out sometimes so for me, it's not yet fully Autumn. 😂 That's my indication the season has changed hahaha
I like Atami so much! Beach and onsen and so many ryokan - they are just perfect for a quick getaway. Lots of climbing - true, if I live here, I will be forced to exercise. I like walking but not climbing. 😂 But still, I like this place.
I can't remember anything like that. I might have missed it! What book is it? Now I'm curious.
Here's the statue:
It's a scene from Konjiki Yasha by Ozaki Koyo. You can read a brief summery of the story here
Thank you! It's pretty popular. I tried looking for it in the maps and so many people had their photos taken in the statue.
I got now why I wasn't able to see it. I was not walking in this area. I was walking in the beach so I failed to see the famous statue.
The story seems interesting. It's just sad the book wasn't finished.
You must be killin' it out here!
@dbooster just slapped you with 1.000 PIMP, @wittyzell.
You earned 1.000 PIMP for the strong hand.
They're getting a workout and slapped 1/2 possible people today.

Oh, gosh! What a lively virtual tour miss. I was thinking about the bullet train in Japan and how fast it was in an actual occurrence. I can imagine myself feeling dizzy. Not a fan of train and boat actually.
I love the two arts under your feet. Those are are so bubbly, creative and perfect for hanging on the walls. The beach was pretty calm though. Not much of people too which is good for me.
Have some !PIZZA
The one I rode is not the bullet train ha. 😅
The bullet train is actually comfortable. You won't feel dizzy if it's running normally - like fast. If it runs slow, then you'll get dizzy.
There was a lot of this artwork but I didn't take photos of each one. They're fun to look at. Not many people noticed them though.
The beach was still calm when I arrived and not yet a lot of people. When night came, it got crowded. But at that time, I already had a spot where I could just wait and enjoy the show.

Thanks for sharing a nice virtual tour!♥️ Love the steep staircase.😊
It was so tiring ascending 😅
Hahaha... What goes down must come back up!
Hahaha! True but there was another way. It's not a shortcut and it doesn't have stairs but I was still dead tired 😂
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Ganda nmn ng loob ng train jan..at mukhang mas spacious..
Kya pla naghahanap ako more photos sa beach ..nsa previous pla 😅
There are other train companies na luma na trains nila and not so spacious. This one is kinda modern because it's on the main line.
Na share ko na kasi dati ung beach 😂
This looks like the scene from the Japanese anime "Your Name" ☺️
Kanice jud kaayo diha @wittyzell.
Dbaaa?! But it's not this staircase. The one in Your Name is just in Tokyo. Maybe one day I can go there and share about it.

Thanks for sharing, you really took me around Atami🤗. In my country it is rather rampant to disregard the zebra crossing😂
Hahaha! It's not so rampant here because most Japanese people will really follow the rules.
If it's so rampant there, then that's a bit scary, prone to accidents.
Actually accidents tend to happen more on the zebra crossing 😂
Hahahaha! Why?!! LOL
That's so opposite!
That's Nigeria 😂😂
Hahaha! I should remind myself that in Nigeria, the crossing is more dangerous 😂
😂😂😂
That moment when you arrived in a skeptical place you thought you are lost HAHA! Good thing there was a map in case. Ahh~ that city lights at night so pretty!
The map really helped a lot! And I just actually followed some people. I was thinking they're going to the same direction as I was. But most of them went to a place unknown to me so I went on my own way and thought I got lost because only few people were walking alongside with me. 😅
Ahhhh, I super love the night view UwU. Pero ang galing naman, even if it has map I think magkakandaligaw ligaw pa rin ako, lol. Mejo uvuv talaga ako sa direksyon ee huehue. Anyways, ang ganda jan. Sarap mag muni muni habang naga imagine na may kasamang afarm, na kahawak kamay huehue. Charrr, lelelel.
Hahaha! Ibang level ang imagination but I like it.

Such beautiful landscape photos!I love Japanese cities and architecture. It sounds like a really good idea to live in Japan in the future. I'm following all of your posts so I feel like a local citizen when I come to Japan 😂
There are many foreigners here in Japan especially Tokyo. But if you wanna live in Japan, maybe best not to live in Tokyo. The countryside is not the best too because it also has their own troubles and difficulties. Maybe a place like this is nice to live. It's close to Tokyo, not so countryside and really nice location.
Yes, that's exactly what I want. It shouldn't be a crowded city like Tokyo, but it shouldn't be far from technology. Let's see what the future holds.
Wow! witty
You always do something, going to resturant , visiting many places all these things make a adventures life. I am zealous ..😂😂 I wish I could do so.
Atami is wonderful. Beaches and hills makes it worth seeing. The night view is awesome.
Thanks for sharing 😀
Thanks @th4488! It's not all the time that I am going out though but when I do, I enjoy it and take a lot of photos with me so I could treasure the memory. We're not young forever so it's really nice to collect some memories that we could recall when we get older.
Well said witty.👌👌 We should store the present for that in future we can introspect. Introspecting past is always fun and then the captured memories must help us to do so.
Love the beach and the cleanliness of every place, I fell in love with the beach more soon as darkness took over. Japan is one of my dream destinations 🥰
The beach is actually not white sand. The beaches in the Philippines are still the best for me, esp Cebu but because the beaches in Japan, or Japan as a whole, are so clean, I really admire this place.
Hope you can visit soon!

.You are welcome! Having no umbrella while walking in the beach and back to the station, I felt like I was a star in a music video 😂
It felt like i had a tour in the images !
The place seems intresting!
Thank you! I like this place actually! I would be back for more in the future!
The staircase looks similar with the one in Kimi no nawa, witty. hahaha. I kinda remember a highschool romance manga which features Atami, just forgot the name.
ANG linis linis linis talaga ng Japan @wittyzell ! I was laughing as that map wont really help me if ako naligaw.I would rather ask around. Bahala na na kung pointing here and there na especially if ndi na magkaintindihan due to language barrier. 😅😂
Hahahah! At least you are not shy to ask around. I’m a bit shy so I don’t usually ask people for directions or anything else. 😅
Thank you for sharing another beautiful place in Japan again. I really adore all the places in Japan that you shared, I hope I can really see Japan soon, thank you for inspiring me by showing me a glimpse of beauty of Japan! :)
The images are very good, it is a good place to visit. Thanks to you I have been able to take a pleasant walk through a very interesting place.
Thank you! Those were not edited except for the cover photo.
