A tingling sensibility, once again. / ひりひりするよな感性を、もう一度(ENG/JPN)

If I read books, I like to read art books, picture books, novels, and essays. Probably since my college days. Of course, I read a lot of technical books when I was in college. The university library's collection was surprisingly small, so I would ride my bicycle from my lodgings at the time to the Kyoto City Central Library, a 30-minute ride each way, and borrow enough books to fill my bicycle basket.

After I graduated and started working for a company, I spent a lot of my earnings on CDs and books. Some of them were bought at a used book fair held in a corner of a shopping building in front of the station. One of them was a novel by Izumi Suzuki titled "Heart on Fire! Dare ka erase" by Izumi Suzuki. It was priced at 300 yen, so I bought it without hesitation. I am sometimes thankful for used bookstores that don't understand the value of used books (laugh). The title of this novel, “Dare ka erase” is funny and tasteful. I forget the content, but I remember it was interesting.

Remembering this, I want to read Izumi Suzuki's book again. I thought about reading it at the library, but I don't feel like it is my book because I have to return it after borrowing it from the library. I feel uncomfortable if I want to take good care of it. So I bought “Izumi Suzuki Premium Collection” from Amazon.

I started with the essays first, and then read the science fiction short stories little by little. Izumi Suzuki's combination of a tingling sensibility and her ability to construct a detailed world creates a unique world. I wonder what Izumi Suzuki would think if she saw today's Internet-dependent world. What kind of world would she describe? She committed suicide in 1986, and although there are some minor words that remind us of the times, overall, Izumi Suzuki anticipates the world of today. This is a science fiction writer.

Izumi Suzuki's works have been translated in recent years. As an old reader, I am happy to see this.

私は、本を読むなら画集や絵本、小説、エッセイを読むのが好きだ。多分大学時代からそうだ。もちろん大学時代は専門書もたくさん読んだ。大学の図書館の蔵書が意外にしょぼく、当時の下宿から自転車で片道30分かけて京都市立中央図書館へ行って、自転車のかごいっぱいになるほど本を借りていた。

そして卒業して会社勤めを始めてからは、稼いだお金をずいぶんとCDや本につぎ込んだ。その中には駅前のショッピングビルの一角で開催していた古本市で買ったものもあった。その中のひとつが、鈴木いづみの「ハートに火をつけて！だれが消す」という小説だ。なんと300円だったので迷わず買った。価値のわかっていない古本屋って、ありがたいこともある(笑)。この小説のタイトル「だれが消す」ってツッコミを入れているところが笑えるし、センスいいなと思う。内容は忘れてしまったが、面白かったと記憶している。

そんなことを思い出して、また鈴木いづみの本を読みたくなってきた。図書館で読もうかと思ったが、図書館で借りたら返さなければならないから自分の本という気がしないのだ。大切に扱おうと思うと気が引ける。そんなわけでAmazonで「鈴木いづみプレミアム・コレクション」を購入した。

最初にエッセイから読み始めて、SF短編も少しずつ読んでいった。ひりひりするような感性と、緻密な世界の構築能力とが合わさって独特の世界を醸し出している。鈴木いづみが今のインターネット依存な世界を見たらどう思うだろうか。どんな世界を描写するだろうか。彼女は1986年に自殺したが、細かい単語に時代を感じさせるものはあるが全体的に、今の世界を先取りしている。これぞ、SF作家である。

鈴木いづみの著作は、近年翻訳もされているらしい。昔の読者としては嬉しいことである。
