RE: Manga Mondays #20: Share Some Manga Recommendations

in The Anime Realm6 months ago

Some time ago I recommended a manga by Nobuyuki Fukumoto and today I will share another title with you. This time for Mahjong fans. This comic is called Akagi and its main character is a man with the same name. The protagonist is a sociopath who doesn't care about anything at all. When he doesn't risk his life, he doesn't feel alive. We meet him as a young boy who is bored with "simple gambling", playing coward (two players drive two old cars towards a cliff, the one who jumps out of the car second wins), so he decided to play something more difficult - gambling with criminals and people from a dark star. Much like Kaiji, Akagi isn't a very pretty comic. The line isn't completely terrible and I've seen worse, but I've also seen much better. The author wrote a fight that is longer than Goku vs. Freezer (which has been a symbol of long fights in anime for years). It would have been shorter, but Akagi had so little respect for his own life that he helped his opponent.
