What makes this show special is presence of excellent moral dilemmas. If you had power to punish world's worst criminals who escaped justice -- wouldn't it be irresponsible to not do so? Would you not use the only supernatural assassination weapon, if only to prevent it from falling into wrong hands? I like when anime show goes beyond mere entertainment and eye-candy by delving into intellectually stimulating philosophical matters.

Yeah, you're right! Death Note stands out because it forces us to question our own sense of justice and morality. While using the Death Note to punish criminals might seem justified, the anime also shows how absolute power can corrupt even the best intentions, making it a truly thought-provoking experience.
When I think about it, it is hard for me to see that "absolute power corrupts" component. Arguably, Light Yagami embarked on the wrong mission, needlessly killing even those who was already in prison. (How is this justice?) What was "corrupted" in him that was originally perfect?
I can see slippery slope of (mis-)using Death Note for self defence to kill even innocents, which might be considered as corruption, but not by "absolute power".
Yeah, I understand where you're coming from! Light's actions were extreme from the start, so rather than power corrupting him, it may have been that he just revealed who he truly was.
