From the past few months, I've really gotten into anime. The first anime that I watched was Death Note. I really liked it, mainly due to the ingenious detective action that had me sitting on the edge of my seat throughout. The anime is an action-filled story of two of the most intelligent individuals in anime history, L. and Light Yagami. The best thing about this anime that made it so thrilling is them always trying to outsmart each other in a war of tactics and lying.

Plot

Death Note's plot is straightforward but actually fascinating: Light Yagami, a high school student who is a genius, discovers a supernatural notebook that enables him to kill anyone by writing down their name. Desiring to create a world without crime, he becomes Kira and begins killing people whom he deems evil. His crimes, however, attract the attention of the world's greatest detective, L, who is bent on capturing him. What ensues is an excellent game of mind and brains that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.

One thing that Death Note fandom likes to debate on is: Is Light or L better? I believe that this question has no right answer, for both characters have their own strengths and weaknesses. Light was a genius who was a mastermind when it came to plotting and manipulating individuals, but his largest weakness was that he was too self-assured, which ultimately got him into trouble. L, however, is a genius who relied on reasoning and instinct in order to solve cases. Most of the time, he was right on who the killer was, but his inability to find tangible evidence kept him from apprehending the killer. Although the fact that L is a genius is interesting, I found it more interesting to see Light's transformation from an ordinary student to a cold-blooded genius who thought he was the god, so thus I liked his character more.

Aside from the battle between Light and L, Death Note also explores serious issues such as justice, morality, and the dangers of absolute power. The existence of the Shinigami, especially Ryuk, adds a good dose of magic to the series. The Death Note itself has strict and interesting rules, presenting special challenges that test Light's brains. The constant battle between Kira's supporters and opposers keeps the tension rolling, with each episode keeping the viewer on the edge of his seat. These things make Death Note a must-watch for all those who love to think.

Another reason Death Note is so engrossing is because the series is full of surprises. The series is full of surprise twists, and no one is ever quite safe. Just when you are sure of what is going to happen, the series will surprise you and do something completely different, keeping the show suspenseful and unpredictable. This makes you unable to stop once you have begun.

The music and the animation also make the show more captivating. The dark and detailed imagery is appropriate for the dark tone of the series, and each scene becomes dramatic. The music, particularly the intense background music, contribute to the suspense and complement the mind games of Light and L to perfection. These help to pull the viewer into the world of Death Note, and it is even more fascinating.

The supporting characters also help to build the story. Misa Amane, Near, and Mello all contribute something new to the story. Misa's melodrama with Light and her own possession of a Death Note add melodrama, and Near and Mello continue L's work in their own way. Each of these characters have a different perspective on justice and power, so the story is even more complicated.

Conclusion

If you want to watch something light-hearted or an action packed anime that has clear heros and villians, then Death Note is not for you. However, if are searching for an intense anime that will make your mind burn calories by thinking, then Death Note is something that you should definitely try. It possesses the perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and intelligent storytelling that few anime possess. The cat-and-mouse game of wits between Light and L, the moral dilemmas brought about by the Death Note, and the never-ending loop of plot twists are all things that add up to make this a thing that you will never soon forget. Whether you are Light or L, there is one thing that you can be sure of—Death Note is a masterpiece that will leave an indelible mark on whoever watches it.

What makes this show special is presence of excellent moral dilemmas. If you had power to punish world's worst criminals who escaped justice -- wouldn't it be irresponsible to not do so? Would you not use the only supernatural assassination weapon, if only to prevent it from falling into wrong hands? I like when anime show goes beyond mere entertainment and eye-candy by delving into intellectually stimulating philosophical matters.

Yeah, you're right! Death Note stands out because it forces us to question our own sense of justice and morality. While using the Death Note to punish criminals might seem justified, the anime also shows how absolute power can corrupt even the best intentions, making it a truly thought-provoking experience.

When I think about it, it is hard for me to see that "absolute power corrupts" component. Arguably, Light Yagami embarked on the wrong mission, needlessly killing even those who was already in prison. (How is this justice?) What was "corrupted" in him that was originally perfect?
I can see slippery slope of (mis-)using Death Note for self defence to kill even innocents, which might be considered as corruption, but not by "absolute power".

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from! Light's actions were extreme from the start, so rather than power corrupting him, it may have been that he just revealed who he truly was.
