blurring my own vision a bit also helps in this regard, actually a lot of art tutors also talk about this tip. the brain is very visual and knows how to fill in the gaps

It works just by squinting your eye and looking at the blurred lines, The only similar example I can give is when people look at clouds and make images from it, you can also look at your painting and make shades and coloring from it.
