Recently i have visited Ruhia Railway Station, a local railway station of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Railway is a state-owned and state-run railway transport company in Bangladesh. It is headquartered in Dhaka. In 1990, the agency conducted its activities under the newly established Ministry of Railways.
Bangladesh Railway has a total route of 2955.53 km with a total of 25063 regular employees. Bangladesh Railway operates the lion's share of Bangladesh's rail transport system. However, there is also the participation of private companies. For example, catering for food and beverages, railway reservations and ticketing arrangements for selected routes and trains, and installation, operation and maintenance of fiber optic cables on major railways have been entrusted to the private sector.
The Bangladesh Railway is basically divided into two parts, one on the east side of the river Jamuna and the other on the west side. These are called Eastern and Western, respectively. The length of the eastern side is 1269 km and the length of the western side is 1428 km. In addition, the 32 km long Rupsha-Bagerhat broad-gauge railway section on the eastern bank of the Rupsha River in the south is also considered as the third part of Bangladesh Railway.
There are currently two types of railways in operation in Bangladesh: broad-gauge (5 feet 6 inches or 1,6 mm) and meter-gauge (1000 mm). There are both meter and broad gauge railways in the eastern part of the country, but there are also broad gauge railways from Bangabandhu Bridge Eastern Railway Station to Dhaka in the eastern part. Previously narrow-gauge (2 ft 6 in. Or 648 mm) railways were in use, but are no longer used.
