Navigable rivers play an important role in trade and commerce. The city plays an influential role in development. Almost all the major cities, towns and commercial centers of Bangladesh are built on the banks of different rivers; For example, Dhaka metropolis on the banks of the river Buriganga, Narayanganj city and port on the banks of the river Shitalakshya, Chittagong on the banks of the river Karnafuli, Mymensingh on the banks of the old river Brahmaputra. Hydroelectricity can be generated from rivers with adequate flow, velocity and slope. Hydropower is being generated by building a dam on the river Karnafuli at a place called Kaptai. It is the only hydropower plant in Bangladesh.
