Wonderland

The rocking chair swayed slightly under the motionless weight of the old woman. Her gaze was fixed on the horizon with a serene melancholy.

When her daughter came and kissed her icy cheek, the world stopped. A wrenching sob burst from her throat as she realised that her mother had departed.

In her stiff, wrinkled hands, an old children's storybook rested. ‘Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the same one her mother had read to her as a child. As she shakily opened it, a few words written in pencil on the second page caught her attention:

‘This coming the sum of my days, in which I am going to the wonderland of your childhood. And I sit here, gazing at the horizon, hoping to hear an I love you, my mother’.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she pressed the book to her chest. Those would be her mother's last words to her. A longing for filial affection that she would never hear from her lips.

He looked again at the old woman's peaceful face, her eyes eternally closed to the world. At least she had departed in peace, travelling to wonderland.
