This past year began on a low note for me. The most important person in my life just got lowered into the ground and I was completely lost. I remember waiting for an online acceptance list to come out. It was for a creative writing seminar. I didn't submit something new because the application was at the time of her death and I couldn't write. I've always wanted to be there and I just couldn't let the deadline go by without sending something in. I also remember waiting for extra hours for the email which didn't come. Then I quietly packed and was on my way to the western part of the country, hoping to figure out how to get the grief out. I had nothing left to distract me with. Shortly after that, the pandemic came.
Sometime ago, I wrote about the pain that came with the year, but that's just one part of it. The year isn't over yet and the lessons are already overflowing. Over 70% of the people I've spoken to said that this is the year they grew the most. They learned things they never expected, and in a beautiful way.
Love and humanity can change a person so much. No, this isn't being humane because you believe it's expected of you. I mean the hunger to be for others. The desire to put others first before yourself. The joy and fulfilment that comes from seeing the smiles on their faces. Nothing beats that. This year alone, I've learned that my struggle is just the bare minimum. There are people who go through more and you never hear them complain. I've learned to shut my mouth when necessary and do what's expected of me.
No, this doesn't mean that my own struggles aren't valid. That are in every sense, but they've also become a source of strength. The strength I need to be there for others, helping them, loving them out of my own accord. Not because I think it's the right thing. This time, because I know and most importantly, I want to do it.
The biggest lesson yet is the yearning to continue to be of service to others. It loosens some hidden part of you, that part you didn't know you had in the first place. You want to do more and it brings you so much happiness. Over time, it becomes a lifestyle, and people begin to associate you with it.
I would say that the people in my life contribute a whole lot to this growth. Having the right people in your life can't be overemphasized. The positive energy can do wonders for you. You'll be amazed at how far you've come.
How about you? What has this year taught you?
