Biodiversity loss refers to the accelerating rate at which species of plants, animals and other organisms are disappearing worldwide. The main causes of this loss are:

Habitat destruction: The expansion of agriculture, urbanisation and deforestation result in the loss and fragmentation of natural ecosystems, leaving many species without homes or resources to survive.

Climate change: Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns directly affect species, altering their habitats and making it difficult for them to survive.

Pollution: Pollution of air, water and soil, caused mainly by human activities such as industry and intensive agriculture, has a negative impact on species health and diversity.

Invasive species: The introduction of alien species into natural habitats can displace and extinguish native species, disrupting the ecological balance.

The consequences of biodiversity loss are significant. The resilience of ecosystems is lost, making it difficult for them to adapt to environmental changes. In addition, species loss can have an impact on the food chain, crop pollination and the provision of vital ecosystem services for humanity.

To address this problem, action needs to be taken at global and local levels. Possible solutions include:

Habitat conservation: Protect and restore natural ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands and coral reefs, ensuring the survival of the species that depend on them.

Pollution regulation and reduction: Implement policies and technologies that limit pollution and promote more sustainable practices in industry and agriculture.

Reducing deforestation: Encourage sustainable forestry practices and promote reforestation to preserve habitats for plant and animal species.

Education and awareness-raising: Promote the importance of biodiversity and its conservation, encouraging individual and collective actions to protect it.
