“The thing about Cousin Harry is, he grounds us, but still finds a way to bless us so much that it is a punishment to miss half a day playing and hanging out, but then again, it's just not so bad. I think what he thinks about grounding is just adjusting our thinking.”
“BRUH – no! I love you, but it's not the time for this – we gotta get outta here so they can see this – and no spoilers, either!”
Ten-year-old Andrew and nine-year-old George Ludlow were grounded for having made a very interesting use of their big cousin Col. H.F. Lee's soap, but only for half a day because they had done the wrong thing for a heroic reason, and he credited them for that part.
He also dropped off the two copies of “Children and Grandchildren of the Old Lodge” from the county library for Andrew and George to read while grounded. The book was about veterans' families at the Veteran's Lodge in Lofton County from the opening of the Veteran's Lodge in 1866 to 1926, when the Lofton Trust renovated and expanded the Lodge the first time. This was interesting to Andrew and George because they were living at the Veteran's Lodge as adopted children of their veteran grandfather, Capt. R.E. Ludlow Sr.
“So, we're basically children and grandchildren of the new lodge, at the same time,” George said.
“Looks like it – and, kids back then were getting into the same kinds of trouble we are,” Andrew said.
Col. H.F. Lee looked in quietly and smiled at the two little boys all caught up in their reading, both that they were caught up and actually enjoying themselves, and knowing the surprise ahead of them when they got to the end of the book.
“One of the children living at the Veteran's Lodge, watching the architectural brilliance of Major I.C. Hamilton in renovating the Lodge for the 20th century, was a little boy named Edwin Ludlow, whose well-nurtured genius would help bring the entire infrastructure of Lofton County, VA into the 20th century over the coming five decades.”
“Wait, what?” George said.
“Yeah, we're not the first Ludlow kids to live here,” Andrew said. “That's our great-grandfather Edwin Ludlow – he learned how to do all that stuff watching I.C. Hamilton our Cousin Ironwood's grandfather, do it here.”
“That means we're all on the right track, living here, and getting ready to change the world!” George said. “Like great-grandfather, like great-grandchildren! It also means Cousin Harry really has forgiven us and believes in us!”
“Well, we kinda knew that, because, you know, the thing about Cousin Harry is, he grounds us, but … .”
“BRUH …!”
Not ten minutes after the half-day was complete, Andrew and George had all their siblings reading and looking at pictures and discovering what they had discovered, and then Capt. Ludlow came in through Zoom and told all the stories and answered all the questions his grandchildren had … and, realized his family's life had come full circle as he saw the wonder in the faces of Edwin Ludlow's great-grandchildren. He would discuss that the next day with his therapist.
Meanwhile, this led to a quiet day on the cul-de-sac because of course the little Ludlows pulled in their friends the little Trents and their little cousin Vertran Stepforth, and wouldn't you know that Col. Lee just happened to have two more copies of the book so that all eleven children could have access to it?
“Well, this is brilliant, Harry – as tired as I know you are with that Sunday run you had to make to Washington, you figured out how to give all the adults here a bit of rest,” Mrs. Maggie Lee purred to her husband.
“Indeed … thank you for covering watching the five non-grounded Ludlows so I could go back to bed for a little while in the first half-day, and now, you can catch a beauty nap while I drop these sandwiches off so all of them and their friends can keep reading and talking, Maggie.”
“Thank you, Harry – I'll be back and more beautiful before dinner!”
