Oldest Trent children 21-year-old Melvin and his days-from-18-year-old sister Vanna stood with their 16-year-old cousin Tom Stepforth and just shook their heads from the Trent porch.

“The Ludlow grandparents have just been home two days,” Tom said, “and in allowing their five-year-old grandson to look at the vocabulary their six-year-old grandson is reviewing for the Lofton County Virtual Spelling Bee next week, they have created a monster.”

“I don't think they have created a monster,” Melvin said. “I think they have just accidentally allowed said monster to get the vocabulary to explain himself, because this has been going on since they moved here.”

“I'm just going to go get some popcorn,” Vanna said, “and I bet Pop-Pop will still be there, dying as he is trying not to laugh, when I get back, because … .”

“Because, see, the way I can talk like this is because I digress, because, see, other people just talk about one thing but I have a lot to talk about so I just keep going and when I'm done with one thing – boom – I digress and keep going, see, because, there's only one me and so although it's a lot of different stuff I'm living all of it because, see, there's only one me like there's only one you and only one of that tree over there although I wish there was two, because, see, I really like strawberry trees although strawberries are way easier to pick on the ground and blackberries would be, but, see, thorns, and, see, I don't like thorns although I do like blackberries, raspberries, and roses, see, because roses are red and violets are blue, and see, I like blue but Grayson and I talked about this because he loves blue but violets are confused because violets are violet which is purple, and, see, I like purple but it's not red, and I really like red, like tomatoes, tomato sauce, and strawberries, and also sunsets, but sunsets are also pink and kind of orange, and blue and also violet, kinda like rainbows but you don't need rain, and, see, I like them better because, see--.”

“Got 'em,” Mrs. Velma Stepforth said. “Asking five-year-old Lil' Robert Ludlow why he talks is like going into a bathroom that has mirrors on both sides – you are looking into an infinity mirror and there's no end to the view!”

“I told y'all I'd be back with the popcorn before he was done,” Vanna said as she handed bowls to her grandmother, brother, and cousin.

“Hold my popcorn while I go rescue my husband – actually, get me two more bowls,” Mrs. Stepforth said.

Vanna brought her grandmother two more bowls of popcorn, and then she went to Mr. Stepforth and Lil' Robert.

“Here you go, Thomas – and here you go, Robert – take this to your siblings.”

“Thank you so much!” Lil' Robert said, and went away to share his popcorn with his six siblings while Mr. and Mrs. Stepforth went away laughing!
