“No, not that north, the other north – the cul-de-sac they live on only has two houses on it, so this can't be right!

No. 1: said relative in Edwina's mother's family did not know the Lees had moved a house onto said cul-de-sac, thereby making three just in the last week.

No. 2 …

“Some people just have to test the full limits of stupidity – OK, kids, free garden all-you-can-eat on the golden berry bush!” said Mrs. Thalia Ludlow, getting all seven Ludlow grandchildren into the back yard of the house.

“Oh no – it's about to go down because one of these fools wasn't satisfied being on the six o'clock news and is lost in front of the Ludlow house with gun drawn – get into the studio!” 16-year-old Tom Stepforth said as he hustled his little cousins Velma (11), Milton (9), and Gracie Trent (8) along with his little brother Vertran (9) into his 21-year-old cousin Melvin Trent's home studio.

Melvin, however, had gone to get his gun, and his grandfather, Mr. Thomas Stepforth Sr., had the Veteran's Lodge police on the phone while Melvin's days-from-18-year-old sister Vanna and his grandmother Mrs. Velma Stepforth joined the frightened little ones in the studio.

As it happened, Ludlow grandchildren Eleanor (11), Edwina (8), and Lil' Robert (5) were the children of Capt. R.E. Ludlow's son R.E. Ludlow Jr. … and their mother's family was slow giving up the idea that now that the Ludlow Bubbly was clearly going to make millionaire heirs of their little Ludlow relatives, they should have a way to work their way into proximity to the heirs and their money.

Capt. R.E. Ludlow's thunderous no had taken some years to settle in on most … but one of them was a lieutenant, and so had gotten onto the Veteran's Lodge, drunk, PTSD-ing, broke, and with nothing to lose, and sick and tired of hearing about old “Hell to Pay” Ludlow.

But the two men had never met … and old “Hell to Pay” was a bit smarter than the average bear, throwing his voice up into its high middle range while appearing in overalls … taken for a groundskeeper.

“Lieutenant, may I help you, sir?” he purred in his tenor-for-the-day. “I heard you talking about the other north?”

“Yeah – these civilians and their stupid apps – can't even count, because I'm supposed to be at a cul-de-sac with two houses and you see there's three here!”

“Oh, well, you know, sir, civilians,” Capt. Ludlow purred. “We could probably work our way to Hell and back – did you do Iraq 1 or Iraq 2?”

“Iraq 2, and yeah, that's pretty much Hell and back, with Afghanistan thrown in for purgatory.”

“I was out there too, and that was an experience... .”

And thus Capt. Ludlow walked the lieutenant right away from the house. By the time the police caught up, the lieutenant had broken down and cried, put down his gun, and was being talked by Capt. Ludlow into specialized rehab in the Veteran's Lodge. The police took the gun, and Capt. Ludlow checked the lieutenant in, and that was that.

The next day, the lieutenant called Capt. Ludlow.

“You're not a groundskeeper – they just told me you are Capt. R.E. Ludlow! I came out here to kill you, sir, and you paid for my treatment!”

“That's right,” the captain said. “PTSD and alcohol together will have a man doing stupid things, and I like a sporting kill, myself. Come sober next time, and I'll dispatch you in style!”

The lieutenant laughed.

“Now that I'm sober … and ready to get sober … and ready to deal with this PTSD because of your compassion … I've heard so much about how you have become a peaceful man, and you have made a believer out of me! Six months from now, meet me at the other north, so I can thank you!”

“Deal, Lieutenant!”

Yes ... still CAPABLE of taking folks out, using his freed-up mind to get them healed instead ... Capt. Ludlow does not know it yet completely although he is beginning to sense it, but he is walking in his new life calling, already...
