“Well, yes, and no – I will always have work to do, but being a police captain is my last job in the civilian world. I did not know before the smack hit the fan that I am basically unemployable, but I know now. Folks want to call shots without having their lives and business together way too much in Lofton County – but how many people in management want to be bothered with somebody who can and will jail and kill his superiors when they act a fool? I don't need the drama, and neither does anybody else.”

“But no, I'm not leaving until the job is done – the Lucas case has gone even further to the left, but I'm due to testify in it, and then there's the entire fact that these people have left my officers without a retirement. That has to be handled. And there would always be something else if I allowed it. But Longstreet and those with him are ready, and Officer Baxter and I have in common that we know it is time to go.”

Henry Fitzhugh Lee was talking with his cousin, Capt. R.E. Ludlow Sr., about how life was not quite going as he planned, but …

“It never does,” the older Ludlow cousin said. “My last job in housing – I loved it, and could have stayed in it for years, but it wasn't right for the family – and then I remembered my grandmother's soda recipes, and the Ludlow Bubbly came of that.”

“And that will pretty much retire you,” Col. Lee said, “except for the job encouraging people like us to go through with their mental health treatments.”

“And I'm going to love that even more,” Capt. Ludlow said, “because chief encourager is who I am anyway!”

“Papa,” six-year-old Grayson Ludlow said as he came up, and please excuse me, Cousin Harry, but I need help.”

“What's happening, Grayson?”

“I can multiply, but not this much – George just figured out that the washing machine on spin cycle has a lot more power than a Lego engine, but I gotta know how much so we can run the crane for the space helipad. I said we should figure it out before he turns it on because we don't want too much.”

“Good thinking, Grayson,” Capt. Ludlow said with a smile.

“Really good,” Col. Lee said.

“You jut stay here and tell your Cousin Harry about the new spaceport design while I go have a little talk with George, OK?” Capt. Ludlow said.

“OK,” Grayson said, and happily showed his big Lee cousin the new designs, of course drawn in white crayon on blue construction paper.

“Gotta have the blueprints,” the colonel said.

“Yep, and this is where the numbers go that George and Papa are working out right now,” Grayson said, and was pointing it out when George and Capt. Ludlow came back.

“Papa says we forgot about water resistance,” George said, “and also washing machine spin cycles lock the washer shut, so we wouldn't be able to have good control, so the washer is off limits.”

“Well,” Grayson said, “back to the drawing board.”

“I'll put Lego engines in the next budget,” Capt. Ludlow said, “because there are no safe household substitutes for the power of a Lego engine.”

“That's the great thing about you, Papa,” Grayson said. “You get it.”

“Yeah, and I didn't even have to fear for my life this time,” George said.

“And y'all thought I spent eight weeks away from y'all because I just needed a vacation,” the grandfather purr-rumbled. “No, I had to make sure I got it!”

Col. Lee smiled as his two little Ludlow cousins went away rejoicing.

“That's the real work, there,” he said. “Well done, R.E. – you handled that very well.”

“Whole different ballgame if George had actually turned that washer on,” the captain said, “but, no harm done, so no harm done.”

“I hope that I can be a good a father as you are to your grandchildren,” Col. Lee said, and his big Ludlow cousin put his hands on his shoulders.

“H.F.,” he said, “I learned how to be a better father to my grandchildren by watching how you and Maggie took care of my grandchildren while I was away that eight weeks – how your calm leadership style really helped Edwina and George settle down. You're ready now, and, neither of us have to do this alone. We will encourage each other – that's the work!”

Heya, sometimes I forget these free writes are fiction... I was like "I didn't know they were police captains..." !LOLZ

They are fiction, but there's a lot of real in them ... now, Capt. Lee is a police captain, but also a semi-retired Army colonel, while Capt. Ludlow is a fully retired Army captain, and they are cousins to Capt. Hamilton, a police captain, but also a semi-retired Army major ... the Lee and Hamilton cousins were in military law, and then transitioned into police work in fictional Lofton County, VA.

Time is extra slow in Lofton County ... the days run right, but the months don't ... it's only September 2020 there ... but I will keep that in mind ... they gotta get into 2021 sometime!

I have noticed how slow time goes in Lofton County. I wish I lived there because my days are flying by me.

Me too ... and that is why it is slow there ... a place of refuge ... influenced by Charlie Brown, who is still just six years old, while Linus is still five.
