Five-year-old Lil' Robert Ludlow, having heard this song playing on a car radio, had decided this was his workout song for the day because he had gotten up at the same time as his reveille-minded cousin Col. H.F. Lee and joined his workout.
Lil' Robert felt really good about himself, the day, and the song, having no idea this was the anthem of the marijuana edibles community in Lofton County, VA.
Next door, 16-year-old Tom Stepforth was on the floor, rolling laughing.
“And he knows every word,” almost-18-year-old Vanna Trent said. “Every word!”
“That boy can saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang, though,” Mrs. Velma Stepforth said, which completely defeated her husband's ability to comment – Thomas Stepforth Sr. went on and sat down by grandson Tom and just started laughing with him.
Lil' Robert, having heard Mrs. Stepforth through her screen door in all the innocence of his kindergarten years, came running over, all big smile, shining blue eyes, sweat-drenching blond ringlets, and eagerness to love and be loved.
“Wanna hear it again, Mrs. Stepforth?”
“Sure, baby – saaaanng, baby, saaaaang!”
“Poor Robert,” 21-year-old Melvin Trent said. “He doesn't know any better, and then, these folks here –.”
“What was that, Melvin?” Mrs. Stepforth said.
“I mean, the folks who don't think about who might be getting a contact music high from their foolishness,” Melvin said, and Vanna smiled.
“Good save, bruh,” she said, and they gave each other a high five later on.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Maggie Lee next door was as red as a tomato while Lil' Robert's song and dance routine went on, and Col. H.F. Lee just looked on with a mingling of love and chagrin.
“I didn't know he even was paying attention to that yesterday!” she said.
“Oh, Lil' Robert has the musical sense of his grandfather,” the colonel said. “Horatio Lee's second wife, Ainslee MacMurray, was a musical genius – that's where the local set of Lees-of-the-Mountain get that from. The elder set, though they have some excellent musicians, is more standard Lee on these things, but what you see here in Lil' Robert is that he is a 'MacLee' offshoot.”
“His tuning is stupidly good for his age, too,” Mrs. Lee said. “But why that song?”
“How do we know that God did not permit that song to be written so that Lil' Robert Ludlow would be used by Him to redeem it as a workout song? Lil' Robert gets up with the sun every day to work out with me – and all you need is just one!”
“You know … .” Mrs. Lee said.
“And then, of course, it being Lil' Robert, he will have forgotten about it tomorrow, so … .”
“Go head on and saaaaang, baby! Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang!”
Sure enough, Melvin Trent got in touch with the composer and re-released “Rise with the Sun” as a workout dance mix, thereby repurposing that song in Lofton County!
“Because,” as he said to the colonel about it, “all you need is just one to get an idea who can change things.”
Lil' Robert also got a portion of Melvin's royalties as a finder's fee for his college fund, and a big yellow and blue tank top to wear in his morning workouts!
