The period of time which influenced me the most was during my childhood, my upbringing to be specific. My father instilled within me one lesson I hold close to my heart to this day. He did so with a story, the tale of a boy who was born with one arm and grew to become an undefeated martial artist. His father was known far and wide as a powerful martial artist, and the boy would watch his father train each day with yearning eyes. However, due to his disability, there was no way he could become like his father. So, his wise father taught him but a single, impractical move. Impractical as it may be, this attack could only be countered by somehow stopping the attacker's free hand, but since the boy only had one arm, he became unstoppable after pouring his hard work into mastering the skill. I thought both he and his father was really cool.
When I think back to this story, it sounds so unrealistic. However, the lesson remains all the same to me. All of us are born equal with our own strengths and weaknesses. What makes us different from each other, is the effort we put in. All of us are talented, it just needs to be discovered and exploited. My father also added, if the boy became complacent and never trained, he would not have become the best. And to the boys who lacked confidence, their father said, "it matters not what you achieve if you have done your best, for that, in of itself is an achievement". And so, both boys, fictional and real learnt to never be complacent and always strive forward. To always be confident in ourselves and humble all the same.
