No Rain On The Plain, a five minute freewrite

It had been over a year since Michael had felt the last drop of rain touch his face.

He remembered running outside when he'd heard the thunder, hoping that the rains that had been promised were finally here. But that night, as the lightning flashed in the distance and the thunder rolled like a giant, laughing from beyond the hills, only a few drops hit him.

Not enough to save his crops.

This time, he thought, it must rain.

The Government had given assistance at first, and then that stopped. Instead he was given subsidies to install solar panels. He now farmed electricity instead of food. It was something he supposed, but his family couldn't eat electricity, and the price he received each month for what he supplied kept falling. He was going to have to sell up and move if this continued.

But who would buy this piece of barren land? And what would they pay?

Not enough for him to afford to buy land in a place that still had rainfall.
