"Weekend Shenanigans" a fiction using @mariannewest's 3 prompt weekend freewrite challenge

in Freewriters4 years ago

It’s the weekend and @mariannewest has two freewrite challenges for you.

You can either do the Three Prompt Challenge

or you can choose one of the freewrite prompts from this week

Yesterday, I wrote 6 ZapFic50 stories (ZapFic50=a story told in precisely 50 words) using @mariannewest’s 6 weekly prompts. You’ll find them in this post here.

Today, I decided to try the Three Prompt Challenge.

Weekend Shenanigans

We wanted to see each other, despite a mutual reluctance to brave the bad-tempered congestion of high summer traffic.

"Perhaps we could meet halfway?" Silv suggested, she sounded distracted and I suspected she was scrolling through her Instagram feed while talking to me.

"Where, though?" I asked casually. "Halfway is pretty much the shit part of the city."

"Hmmm," Silv said.

"I mean, I guess we could use that new Portal they opened up the other world."

"Hmmmm... wait what?" "I was just testing you. You sound distracted. Look we don't have to meet up this weekend, if you don't want to."

"I want to."

"Right. Look I'll get in the car and come to you. It might just take a while."

"Okay."

My bag was already packed, I just set the alarm, grabbed it, and my keys and left the apartment. Mrs Rodgers, across the hall closed her door quickly when she saw me. She didn't like me. That was okay, the feeling was mutual.

"Miraculously, nobody was injured," I said.

"Shit," Silv said. "What about the car."

I looked over at the pile of twisted metal and flames that were still flickering around it.

"I think we can safely say, it's a bit fucked."

"Okay. So what happens next?"

I looked at my watch, before continuing, "I phoned the insurance people. They said I can get a hire car. But it's not going to be in the next hour or so. They said trying to find a rental this weekend is difficult."

Silence. Then, "I guess I could come and pick you up."

I took a deep breath.

"I think we should write this weekend off. Try again next week."

After finishing the call the police officer came up to me.

"You are free to go, sir," she said. "The other guy admitted fault. And there are witnesses."

She sounded disappointed. She didn't like me. She wanted to take me in. Not the other guy.

There was a diner just down the road. I told the insurance company to get the rental company to meet me there.

"I need a hot cup of coffee," I said.

The woman behind the counter of the diner looked familiar. I studied her out of the corner of my eye while she got my coffee and fixed me a plate of eggs.

"There you go, sir," she said.

"Thanks," I said and looked at her name tag. "Jenny." Then it clicked. "Jenny Cooper?" I asked.

She looked at me frowning, as if trying to work out if she knew me or if I was trying to serve her with something.

"Yes?" she said. "Do I know you?"

I stuck my hand out over the counter. "Brian," I said. "Brian Kleps. We were in school together. You probably don't recognise me. I was kinda quiet."

Her face broke into a smile. It turned out she did remember me.

The day didn't turn out quite so bad, after all.
