She jerked awake, flinging open the window to chase away her demon.

But when she shook off the fingers of fear wrapped around her wrist, no ghost escaped into the night.

Instead, a chill deeper than moonlit air crept into his bones.

Peering into the shadows, she knew with terrible certainty that this was not a bad dream to wake from.

What haunted her even in the shelter of daylight, what she saw in every cloud and wave, was not an invention.

It existed beyond this room, and her soulless eyes had seen it at last.

Dawn seemed far away as she sank to the floor, clinging against the dark realisation that her terror had found her at last in the waking world.
