I just returned.

It will be the last visit we'll have together
on this side of life.

She could not hear me;
nor see me;
nor touch me;
nor make me laugh,
nor remind me again of her numerous teenage antics I'd long forgotten.

Especially,

The time she almost wrecked my car
while taking driving lessons in the parking lot,
and damn near made my heart stop!

Murky are the other memories during the ride home.

A dull voice prompted me to converse.
Too soon;
I couldn't.

So I stared mindlessly out the window,
glancing up into the skyline,
then pressed my nose against the cold window,
searching for a feeling.

Some semblance of sense
in a senseless world.

I struggled to thwart the heartache;
delay the tears.

But the floodgates would not be denied.

Forty is much too tender an age to leave me.
For you were akin to my own daughters.

I don't do drugs.

But God knows
at this moment,

I. Could. Use. An. Injection.

An injection of joy,
so that perhaps when slumber comes this night,
I'll dream a dream of acceptance.

And when morning comes,
so might my peace.

Oh, this is poignant and vulnerably beautiful. An animation I watched during the holidays comes to mind as I read. A young boy triumphs in battle over a wicked old man and saves his entire village by relying on the power of cherished memories!

I believe memories are powerful footprints that tell our tales long after we are gone. They keep us alive in this senseless world. The memories in this piece are both funny and heart-wrenching. I feel the grief and loss in each line. The need for an injection of joy is haunting yet relatable and hopefully, it offers some reprieve.
