MicroFiction: A 250 word story written using the word prompt "value".
...How does society assign a value to a person, place, or object? In each culture, the individuals collectively decide how valuable people, places, or objects are to their lives or to their culture based on a perceived importance. How important a person is worth can be assessed by how that person contributes to his family, his community, and the world overall. Whether the valuation is fair hopefully is determined by a majority who considers all aspects they've developed to assign a value.
Shared beliefs, actions, and contributions that appear to be "normal" as society has previously defined assigned more value to a person.
Each culture determines the "values" they cherish. Being forthright, moral, obeying the laws accepted by the majority, and furthering the advancement of a people can add more weight to a person's appearance as being of value. Even the definition of beauty has been assigned a value. Those outside that range of values are viewed as less than acceptable to society as a whole.
But what truly baffles me is when society places a value on a person based on a "contribution".
Individuals contribute to a society in a variety of ways. I feel it's a tremendous responsibility and burden to place value on a person based on what that person provides to society. Given the fact that not all individuals are on the same level of education, skill set, and personal goals and aspirations, there's no way one can be compared to another.
For instance, if a person is valued in his immediate family, then to his extended family, then community, he is contributing to his society's social order that helps the peaceful existence or co-existence to the world as a whole.
Another aspect that society has deemed valuable is a person's ability to further the the bloodline into the next generation and beyond. Whether that person may be unable to do so based on a myriad of factors, including medical, shouldn't be frowned up.
I share a story based on my perceived "value" of an individual.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 1 December 2024, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2573: value.
Below is my story:
Evan watched several drops of snow splash against the windowsill. Imagining the coldness outdoors, bumps rose up on his arms. Tucking them under the blanket, a chill developed from the thought of an empty life ahead. He stared at the edge of the ceiling, avoiding the exercise schedule posted on the wall below by the nursing staff.
Though no one else who visited the past few days could see it, they could feel the distance he'd wedged between himself and his family; especially, his loving wife, Laurel. The clock advised that she'd be arriving soon. He rehearsed for the hundredth time separation reasons.
Immediately, a pain rose up from below. He searched for the nurse call button just as a knock interrupted.
Lauren smiled as she entered. Instantly noticing his distress, she rushed over to the bed and located the cord.
Once the nurse finished, Evan turned toward the window until Laurel finally inquired, "what's wrong?" in a concerned tone.
Evan could see nothing but darkness and disappointed ahead if he continued their marriage.
"If you want out, I won't resist."
Enraged, Laurel retorted, "why in the hell would you think that? There's more than one option to grow a family, as if you don't know this! As soon as you're home, we'll start planning."
"It's not right that I can't give you what you value most."
"What I value is a husband who's healthy in mind and body to enjoy a long life with. Anything more is a blessing."

«Si quieres salir, no me resistiré».

Amen -- this is a necessary message for RIGHT NOW!
Yes, I believe the message applies to what we're experiencing, especially in light of recent conversations about the worthlessness of females who, for whatever reason, live without offspring. A sad note in the history books.
Thanks for your visit and support. I appreciate it.

That's what I was thinking of too ... the devil's friends who know the price of everything but not the value of humanity outside building their little kingdom get to have their hour ... but God, Who made all, will continue to reign and care for all of His own.
