I confess that I have no memory of seeing the symbolism of carrot and a wooden shoe as part of a Christmas ritual. I felt a little strange about that combination, although I know of the importance of this vegetable to the Low Countries.
In a small condominium on the outskirts of the city, Lilian and her three small children lived there, her husband was abroad serving his country. So she had the most difficult task of raising her children alone.
One of the biggest challenges was to get her children to eat healthy, at least on weekends she made an effort to give them vegetables, especially carrots for the vitamins. But each time the children would throw a tantrum and rarely ate those foods.
In the apartment next door lived a war veteran Mr. John De Boer, an immigrant who had arrived about 60 years ago, at the time his nation was called Holland, but as everything changes in life even the name of the country changed.
One fine day he approached Lilian, you want me to help you with the children, so they eat their carrots... let me tell you a story... So with the mother's consent Mr. De Boer one fine afternoon took a chair and sat down around the table with the children...
Children did you know that in my country surnames have a meaning, so it started to get your attention, in my case De Beor means from the farmers...my grandparents and my grandparents' grandparents were farmers and you know what they grew: Carrot.... let me tell you the story of that vegetable.... The three children had connected with the old neighbor's story.
Also for us from the low countries, when we want to ask santa for our Christmas presents we don't use a sock, no sir we use a wooden shoe and inside we put carrots... So while santa leaves us the presents, he feeds himself with a nice carrot... Santa knows which of you eat your carrots and the more vegetables you eat the bigger your present will be.

Confieso que no tengo memoria de haber visto la simbología de zanahoria y un zapato de madera como parte de un ritual navideño. Me sentí un poco extraño por esa combinación, aunque conozco de la importancia de este vegetal para los países bajos.
En un pequeño condominio ubicado a las afuera de la cuidad, viva Lilian y sus tres pequeños hijos, su esposo estaba fuera, en el extranjero sirviendo a su país. Así que le toco la tarea más difícil que pueda existir criar a sus hijos sola.
Uno de los mayores desafíos era lograr que sus hijos comieran saludable, por lo menos los fines de semana ella se esforzaba en darle vegetales en especial zanahorias por la vitaminas. Pero los niños cada vez hacían una pataleta y rara vez ingerían esos alimentos

Un buen día se le acerco a Lilian, quieres que te ayude con los niños, para que se coman sus zanahorias… déjame contarle una historia… Así con el consentimiento de la madre el seños De Boer una buena tarde tomo una silla y se sentó alrededor de en la mesa con los niños…
Niños sabían ustedes que en mi país los apellidos tiene un significado, así comenzó para llamar su atención, en mi caso De Beor significa de los granjeros… mis abuelos y los abuelos de mis abuelos eran granjeros y saben que cultivaban: Zanahoria…. déjeme que les cuente la historia de ese vegetal…. Los tres niños se habían conectado con la historia del viejo vecino
Además para nosotros los de los países bajos, cuando queremos pedirle a santa nuestros regalos de Navidad no usamos un calcetín, no señor usamos un zapato de madera y adentro le colocamos zanahorias… Así mientras santa nos deja los obsequios, se alimenta con una rica zanahoria… Santa sabe quién de ustedes se come su zanahorias y mientras más vegetales coman más grande será su regalo.
Maravilloso relato, cosas nuevas que aprendemos de las costumbres navideñas. Un abrazo.

You wrote a great story and I truly hope mom can afford buying big presents if the children eat themselves through a mountain of carrots!
St Nicholas his birthday is December 6th and he gave presents and money to the poor (adults included).
At the chimney or backdoor one shoe is placed with carrots and water for the horse? A letter/drawing is added for the Saint.
It's acebration you find in Europe and you will see him with one or more helpers but no elves.
Saint Nicholas doesn't stand for Christmas he's later used by some nations as such and coca-cola made it the fat guy we know today.
