Family Drama, a timely prompt

There's one in every family. That one who thinks they know what is best for everyone, but defines best for everyone along lines of best for me.

You know the one. They usually drink too much, or are dependent on some sort of substance that, apparently, drives them out of their minds and bodies and allows them to be taken over by a consciousness that is irrational, selfish, stubborn, and plain old dumb.

I have a sister like this. She thinks it's me. I'll let you decide

We have partial ownership in a property that has been in the family since 1790. My family has cared for this place, used this place, and loved this place, since before I was born. Another family has inherited a portion of this property. They have not had anything to do with it for as long as I can remember, nor did the person who left it to them. According to my lawyer, they have NO CLAIM on the property by adverse possession, meaning that since they have had nothing whatsoever to do with the property for more than 20 years, it's not theirs in any way. But they are threatening to sue US to sell the whole place off, bit by bit, to maximize their inheritance.

I would like to keep the property in the family, even if I have to be the sole owner of it (not my preference - I could use some help!). My siblings and I could get rid of these others, by filing an adverse possession action with the court. But my crazy sister won't do it. She knows I want to keep it, and she is doing everything she can to stand in my way. Who would not want to keep 100 hundred acres on a large lake, with 600 feet of very private lakefront, in the family?!

I have hired a lawyer to represent me against several memebers of my fam damily. It's so stupid, but I will let the court decide this matter - I have a far better chance of retaining the property in court, than I do in this family.

This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is family drama.

The image is mine, and is of the lakefront in question. Would you allow someone to force you to sell this place if you could keep it?

Sort:

Oh this is sad. Families are supposed to stand UNITED - with each other! not against!
And yet we all know this family you speak of, one way or another. I'm sad and sorry you have to resort to lawyers and courts. GOOD LUCK - may you prevail!

I know so many people in this position ... people do not see the value of anything outside whatever coping strategy they have to deal with the trauma patterns they won't address and fix.

It's amazing really. I wonder what coping strategy I am using here - rational thought it seems to me.

BINGO -- Rational thought and creative work are growing and healing strategies (big up yourself, fellow Guardian of Earth Healing Knowledge)!

It is foolishness, I hope you are successful in court! 👍

Best of luck.

💗🤠💙🙏👍😁

Thanks. I've spoken to you about this place before. It means a lot to me, so I really have no choice but to fight for it, even if I lose even more contact with some of my siblings.

With some siblings that could be a blessing! Idiots are best at a distance....

Looks like a place worth fighting for! Is it close enough For you to live in? I'd move there in a heartbeat....

It's 2.5 hours from where I live now. Central NYS, unfortunately. I'd rather be in a red state, but perhaps we could turn NY red, especially now that the unelected governor and her recently appointed sidekick the health commissioner thought it appropriate for the commissioner to grant powers to the governor that NO BUREAUCRAT should ever have. These actions went nowhere in the legislative bodies of NY, so the commish decided she would just grant them to her buddy herself. It's incredible!!! Surely some of the Dems in this ridiculous state will finally see that many of their politicians are deranged.

They can't stop, no matter how crazy the goal. They are shedding the more intelligent democrats in droves! Hopefully it will be enough to finish them politically, and remove their power!

The retired statistician from the CIA, said that President Trump carried California by over five percent in the last 'election'. So in their strongholds, voters are relatively unimportant...I hope you guys win!!!!!

2.5 hours might be enough when the SHTF happens.

💗🤠💙👍🙏😁😂

At least the county boasts a constitutional sheriff, last I checked.

That is Good, may help keep the tyrant's in check! Sounding better....

Family can be a load, or a blessing; hope yours wake up, and become a blessing!

Yes, this is a timely prompt. I am going through issues with property since my mom's passing. My sisters are getting everything, one was getting it all but the other weaseled her way in. I met with them and the probate lawyer today so I am not in a good mood. After the meeting, I told one of them that I wanted a book and she refuses to give it to me, they are both living in mom's house and have been dividing mom's things between them and their children. I hope and pray that you get the property, they must be crazy for wanting to sell it, it sounds beautiful.

Your mom left you nothing? My poor mother went through that as well. Her mother left everything to one of her brothers, and he didn't even offer her one single item to have for her own. He put the dog to sleep, and auctioned off everything else. I can't understand this at all. I'd rather give it all away. I'm sorry you're having these problems.

thank you, I am sure that mom thought her belonging would be divided between us. She did not have a will, I just knew her wishes. She had a bad stroke and could no longer communicate.

You are right about the timing (of day's prompt) from sounds of it. It's sad that families are like that. I think all they think about is profit. I truly hope you win the court case. That definitely sounds like an amazing place. Who knows, maybe the judge will just give it to you, since no one else wants to inherit it. Makes me want to go kick them out and off the property for you, lol. Keep your head held high and fingers crossed.

That is unlikely, but the court would appraise the property reasonably, encourage us to negotiate in court-supervised mediation, and bring some objectivity to our discussions. The court would carve out the piece I want and give me a chance to buy it from the others for far less than they are demanding for that piece from me now.

Sorry to hear that. I hate quarrels - and especially the family sort.

Thanks. I wish it could be different, this particular sister and I were once close. Now, we are at odds over everything, big and small.
