Is Happiness really a Choice?

"Happiness is a choice" is a very notable quotation by Domonique Bertolucci, who is a happiness expert and life coach. But what is the true intent of this line? Does this mean that just deciding to be happy henceforth will change our perspective and keep us genuinely happy? Well, we all know that's not the way things work.

Then is there any truth behind this? Yes, there is. Here's what I have realized over the years. This does not mean that you need to deliberately decide to be happy outta nowhere. The real and more sensible meaning of this is that your happiness actually is dependant on the life choices you make. It lies in the littlest of the things that decide the course of your daily activities in life. Now, this could be your career stream, work life, love and relationships or even what you will be eating for breakfast. Your happiness lies in these choices. Your happiness depends on what and who you decide to let in your life.

I don't think there is a choice to happiness. It's not as obvious as 1+1 or √2

Choice presumes that free will is true

Happiness is the lack of a complicated relationship with ourselves.

Hi, thanks for sharing your views. I agree with that perspective. But all I was trying to put together in this post was how being happy or not comes from the decisions we make. It could be complicated but it is still coming from what we choose for ourselves.

It lies in the littlest of the things...

Happiness, I think, can be dependent on our gratitude and immersion into the moment. For instance, if I am eating a fruit... I love its color amd texture, it is so juicy and sweet, the flavor is wonderful in my mouth... I forget everything in the world for a time and enjoy this fruit in a simple and dedicated way, and I feel happiness because of it. After eating the fruit, I realize that I must clean my house, which is a mess and I do not like the work ahead of me, BUT then I realize how lucky I am to have a house and not be homeless, so cleaning becomes a celebration and I feel happiness because of it. It's all about our attitude and our mindset. 🙂
