Mirage

I opened my eyes and reality hit me hard. I lay naked on the bed, staring at her silhouette beside me. We had been wrong to think we loved each other. It had all been a mirage, an illusion of deep feelings where only physical attraction existed.

We never nurtured dreams together, our souls never merged into one. Hearts beat to the rhythm of carnal desire, but not to the beat of true love. We were two bodies coming together, but our essences remained separate, unable to blossom.

The soil of our bond was barren, thirsty for that healing rain that never came to water our deepest longings. We clung to the fleeting passion, convincing ourselves that it was enough, until the lie faded.

I slipped my hand out of hers without remorse. There was no more pain, only the certainty that true love requires more than desire. This was a road we failed to travel together, a privilege denied us.

I gathered my belongings and left, leaving behind the mirage of a feeling that never really existed.
