Peanut Butter and Pickles

This is my post for #freewriters Day 2535 prompt, "the worst sandwich," hosted by @mariannewest.

I grew up eating dill pickle and cheese sandwiches on homemade white bread with mayonnaise. I didn't think it was an odd combination, because I grew up with it. Since then I have fallen into conversations with friends about the odd sandwiches we have eaten. One of my friends grew up with peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Another friend likes to eat peanut butter and bacon sandwiches. I think both of those sound dreadful, but I suppose I should try them before I make a final judgement.

But the worst sandwich I ever had was at a Subway sandwich shop somewhere in the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, over 20 years ago. It was a chicken sandwich, and the chicken was not fully cooked. I couldn't eat it.

Other varieties of sandwiches that I do enjoy include peanut butter and honey, peanut butter and jelly, lunchmeat, cheese, grilled cheese, tuna salad, egg salad and chicken salad. From my mother I learned how to grate cheddar cheese and mix it with mayo to make a sandwich spread. After I got married, I quit using mayo because my husband grew up with Miracle Whip instead. I decided I actually like the Miracle Whip better.

In the summer, I love to make a cucumber and onion sandwich with sliced cucumbers and onions fresh from the garden. And sometimes for breakfast I will eat a fried egg sandwich. If I ever have to go on a gluten-free diet, I will be sad to give up sandwiches. I already have a little experience with gluten-free bread, and I know it collapses very easily. It isn't good for much except toast.
