Freewrite/Hot Coals

Sebastian was a clever child who could hardly believe the many myths and legends surrounding Christmas, his intellect didn’t allow him to believe in things he simply could not see, but everything would change that December 25 at midnight. The life of this smart, unbelieving child from Quebec would never be the same since that day.

Everything happened in a long night that he will never forget, Sebastian managed to see from the windows of his mansion how the snowstorm seemed to howl like a pack of hungry wolves, those sounds seemed to fascinate the eccentric child too much. He was practically alone, since his parents had gone out to celebrate Christmas in an exclusive place in Montreal and his nanny was already sleeping a few floors above, however, unlike many children, loneliness did not affect Sebastian at all. He had always felt different from all the other children, especially when he was forced to attend classes in a private school, something that was no longer necessary since the day he injured one of the children with a scissor for having ruined his biology project. From that moment on, Sebastian would only receive private classes from home as it usually happens with many of the children from rich families.

Sebastian undoubtedly felt that his house was too big, and looking back in time, he realized that all those luxuries couldn’t be more empty and superfluous, his life lacked that spark that gives the interesting touch to people's lives no matter how much they cling to the excessive stubbornness of their own nihilism. After all, Sebastian knew that by the rules of a pressing society he could not really spend his whole life alone. Honestly Sebastian couldn’t even think about his Christmas presents, he hadn’t even gone down the chimney to corroborate the incidence of some more than obvious eventualities, it was just another boring Christmas after all.

However, when he went to see his ostentatious and flashy Christmas tree, he noticed an unprecedented event: there were no gifts underneath the tree, only the remnants of those wrappers that are so popular and serve to line the presents every Christmas. Sebastian noticed something even stranger: both the wrapping of the gifts and some of the tree decorations seemed to have been violently torn, but Sebastian's mind could not stop thinking and overthinking about the myriad of possibilities in that kind of dark flint that lay right on his horizon of such provoked by such intriguing ideas. Sebastian didn’t stop there, he quickly went to the chimney to find more clues of what could’ve happened, but it never occured to him the illogical nature of the events that would come next.

A sort of blue demonic entity stood with a frightening posture there in the chimney, Sebastian couldn’t believe his eyes, for the first time in his short life he would experience the true fear of the supernatural. Sebastian's tiny body had been paralyzed for a seemingly long time until the terrifying creature spread its crimson wings and posed before Sebastian's icy body. Staring at him with its piercing golden eyes for a number of seconds that Sebastian cannot even remember, the demon leaves right after throwing some hot coals into the child's hands. During that moment the little Sebastian didn’t even feel the serious burns that those hot coals would leave on his hands, but that single moment would undoubtedly leave permanent marks not only to his physical body but also in the deepest recesses of his mind.
